Why Men Win at Work: ...and How We Can Make Inequality History

Ground breaking insights for men and women
As someone who has been in the same FMCG world as the author and has gone on to be Co Founder of my own business, I cannot recommend this book more. I hope more than anything that men read it as well as women as so many are totally unaware of the positive or negative impact they can have (as I am sure some women can too) on the confidence of those trying to be seen as different but still valuable to businesses serving such a diverse world.

An important book for both men and women
I love this book! It's so readable yet so based on facts and evidence that it really did back up the claims it makes around gender equality. And this is so important because one of Gill's main aims is to have men read this book too and the style of this book really speaks to a masculine reader as well as being super engaging all round. As I coach women with career issues I could see the reasons laid out as to why so many women struggle to progress in a corporate landscape and I love the focus on the importance culture plays in all of this.I also really liked the examples and quotes from a range of contributors so that there were balanced voices throughout - exactly what we're aiming for in the workplace. The really practical to do lists at the end of the book were also great to make it so clear what needs to be done by all of us to get to full gender equality.I'm recommending it to everyone I meet because I think it's such an important book and my husband is reading it I speak. Please read it too and spread the word.

Everyone should read this book
This book is a refreshing and brilliant take on why companies and organisations continue to stay male-dominated at senior levels and why that is not a good thing for anyone.Everyone should read it, male or female, because it removes both the blame and the assumption that this trend is, and has to be, deliberate. Gill Whitty-Collins presents all the reasons why and examines the behaviours, gendered-assumptions and stereotypes from everyone at work, at home, at school and in society that cause the continuing pattern. At the heart of it is a simple message. A 50:50 split at all levels everywhere is better for all organisations, for all women, and for all men. Leadership is better, decisions are better, companies are better, our home lives are better. And the best bit is the last chapter where she tells you how to achieve it.

This Book Needs to be Read by All Good Men
Easy-to-read tome whose fluency makes light work of the complexity of the issues it tackles.Gender inequality at work is undoubtedly the result of complex and often unconscious causes. Gill Whitty-Collins has simplified those causes in engaging language and speaks directly from hard-won experience.Prevailing feelings of a lack of confidence and authority (in comparison to men and boys) are commonplace for women, not so much for men. When an issue doesn't affect you it's pretty hard to be aware of it, let alone understand why it should exist. GWC maps out the contexts in which inequality thrives, explains the value of understanding women's inequality, and then tells each group concrete actions to take to change the status quo.Personally, I finished the book a week ago and have already benefitted from the section on the 7% of female leaders who do 'win at work'. Seeing board communications as a bit more of a 'game', rather than taking things personally, works brilliantly well, as does thinking of my contributions to meetings as 'performances' rather than simply chipping in.Whitty-Collins is clear that she'd love men to read it so I thought I'd try and make a start on that with some of our male employees at Lewes Football Club :-)

Very insightful and interesting
This book was well written and eye opening. I coach women in leaderships roles on how to navigate internally and influence so it was fascinating to read about all the different reasons for the challenges they face.Really well researched and I’ve been sharing it and the concepts within it with my clients and the companies I’m talking to about women’s leadership workshops. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in HR or responsible for diversity and inclusion and any leader, whatever their gender. If men knew this stuff hopefully they could help be part of the change and if women knew it they’d realise the challenges they face are real and not personal to them.Go buy it then give it to the people at the top of your organisation when you’ve read it.

A must read for all working women and our daughters
I loved it! Very well researched, lots of thought provoking and shocking material in here, clear and powerfully constructed points and very well written. Wish I could write like that.Loved the umbrella theory, definitely relevant for all working women!Scary to see myself in parts of the book but empowering to be able to rationalise why things unfold the way they do. Definitely changed my practice and my interactions based on the information in this book.I will keep this on my shelf ready for my daughter.I definitely recommend this book!

Engaging
Highly recommended. This is a book that I will use time and time again. Anyone who believes the workplace should be a meritocracy then this is a book well worth a read. For anyone who believes the workplace IS a meritocracy then this book is a must-read.The book challenges our well-rehearsed bias and our acceptance of this as being normal and ok. It offers evidence and examples to back up the messaging and was easy to read and understand. The author is both an academic and a well-practiced leader, which for me gave enormous credibility to the key messages.Thought-provoking and at times just gave the evidence for things that we already know but conveniently ignore. Very happy to recommend.

Thought provoking read on how we can banish gender inequality!
A fabulous overview of why our workplaces are still suffering from gender equality. But most importantly Gill Whitty-Collins gives some practical steps on how we can all (no matter our gender or job role) take steps to create true gender equality. As a coach working with women executives - I've returned to this book time and time again to share insights that will help my clients understand and overcome the challenges they face.
