Description
This is an incredible, small bulb, that can grow to about 1 1/2" in diameter when mature, that surprises you at the end of August and early September with 4" diameter, dark-red "spidery" blooms on a 15" stem.
The bulbs typically offset every 2-3 years by a process called vertical fission forming 3 bulbs (splitting vertically with one on each size of the "mother" bulb) and eventually form an attractive clump that will add interest to your flower beds.
We grow them as a border, because they send up their foliage after they bloom and it stays green all winter, looking almost like border grass and dies back about April.
This bulb originates in the orient, and there are numerous species and hybrids available in white, yellow, orange, salmon and other shades.
There are two primary flower shapes, this one and one that is more of a trumpet shape. This variety is the most hardy.
