Goldmine of Info!
Took a community college interior design class just for fun and wound up with this text that I'm now urging everybody I know to read before doing ANYTHING to an interior space! It's off-puttingly expensive and libraries don't seem to carry it, so you may have to live on ramen for a month or two just to buy a copy, but it's worth every penny and can be used for the rest of your life.Design is a fascinating perspective on the uses of space, a discipline to which most of us have never been exposed and don't understand. So we either paint everything beige or hire a designer. You may want to hire one anyway, but read this book first! It will facilitate good communication if you actually know how to describe what you want, and can also protect you from unnecessary charges by an unscrupulous designer. But mostly it's just fun and wildly interesting, a bit of a life-changer giving you fresh eyes as you suddenly pay attention to a friend's living room, an airport lounge or a trendy restaurant. Colors, fabrics, window and floor-covering, lighting and artistic decor as well as pathfinding, signage, safety and disability access all jump out at you everywhere once you have even the most basic grasp of how design works. This is not the women's-magazine-level of design discussion ("Heidi and Sean chose earth tones for their casual dining room overlooking a misty lake."), but a real, professional, insider richness of terms, measurements, requirements and materials written for students who will become interior designers.
