Instructional Story Design: Develop Stories That Train

Awesome for all levels!
As a hopeful Instructional Designer I found this book to be crafted seamlessly! True to story telling form, you follow Dayna, an instructional designer that is learning about the world of crafting corporate training through storytelling. The book comes with valuable graphic organizers you can download and reference in the back of the book for the built in practice activities. Rance was crafty when writing the plot of Dayna's story and the content to sync with each other. Not only do you get the nitty gritty valuable content, but you see it applied with Dayna's story as an example, and your given practice and thoughtful reflection with each new portion of content. The book itself is a prime example of learning through story. I am SO excited to learn more about the art of storytelling and using the methods described in Instructional Story Design.

Create more engaging learning and improve retention!
This is a great book for anyone who wants to take their learning material to the next level. Learning development professionals often struggle to ensure their materials are engaging and the participants retain the material beyond the course. Rance Greene's approach encourages instructional designers to understand who their learners are, beyond their professional expectations and the identified gaps for which the learning is targeted to correct, and then to use stories with characters with whom your participants can relate. Rance clearly understands instructional design and is a skilled storyteller in his own right.

Definitely worth reading!
Instructional Story Design is a fantastic book! Not only is it an interesting read that explains how to create great stories- it also allows the reader to readily start applying the process right away. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the Instructional design field who is interested in using more story telling in their projects.

This book does not support real world ISD work
I was really looking forward to learn how to integrate storytelling into training courses I develop. If you have unlimited time and resources than this book could be helpful. But, not in the real world, when ISDs have a fixed amount of time allocated to design and development. I question the learning value of many of the suggestions, particularly the one that says to give the character a detailed physical description and back story. There’s no time for this in the real world.
