Best alternative version I’ve read!
I do not usually leave reviews but this book was so well written in the style of Jane Austin I just had to! It had an interesting and plausible plot line plus the characters were so well written and developed that I just had to let all ardent Austin fans know!

The same but so different
Very beautifully written.Main events of P&P are present but author gets us there by completely different route. One of the best variations I read and I read a lot of them. Storyline is very, very interesting. And my favourite Elizabeth so far. The smartest and strongest version of her I ever came across in a book.Highly recommended.

A charming and well constructed variation - 4.5*
This book starts for a very different premise - what if Elizabeth is not a Bennet any longer but is in fact a widow. This Elizabeth has had all of her romantic ideals knocked out of her and has no intention of remarrying. Into this situation comes the usual Netherfield park residents plus an additional man bent on trouble.Elizabeth is extremely strong willed and does not suffer fools at all. Over the course of the first half of the book the reason for this is gradually revealed. At the halfway point it seems that there can be no chance of Darcy and Elizabeth finding their way to each other. The way in which the author achieves this feat is masterfully done. The writing and use of language is excellent throughout this book and the editing is very tight. Why the dropped 1/2*? I felt that the first half was a little too long and would have benefitted from a little less descriptive information, beautifully done though it was. I also found that the use of archaic words which are no longer in regular usage was a little too much in places.Overall this is a highly recommended read which I am sure I will return to again.

Excellent
Thoroughly enjoyable book - I read it in a day and was sad to come to the end. I get most of my books on KU but after reading the sample, I was happy to pay for it. The characters felt like real people, and similar to the originals in P&P - unlike in some cases where they seem to be caricatures of the originals. I particularly appreciated the portrayal of Elizabeth’s ability to put people in their place without them even realising how she had done it!I look forward very much to more books from this author.

Dam n good!
It is a delight, to read a Pride and Prejudice variation that is not mired by American spellings grammatical errors, malapropisms and words out of time, on every page, jarring you back to reality like nails on a chalkboard. There is the odd error in the above vein and, if it were possible, I would give it 99.9 out of 100. Well, five stars it is, then!Apart from that, the story itself is excellent, with just the right level of angst and all the characters acting true to form - in some cases, truer - I particularly liked the portrayals of Mr Bennet and Lady Catherine (as well, of course, as Lizzie). Also in its favour, there are no sex scenes it would have been out of place, to include one.I am genuinely delighted with this story and will seek out other work by this author. Thank you for this book.

Authentic
If you can first overcome the surmise that Elizabeth, rather than being a feisty young girl is a feisty young widow who, after the violent death of her husband, inherited the Netherfield estate, this is a great book. The author using authentic language and idioms takes us behind Jane Austen’s work, filling in the conversations and thoughts of her characters that Miss Austen didn’t report, yet keeping to the true character of each one and including the speeches that we know and love from the original. An alternative Pride and Prejudice but not so different that it is unrecognisable.Certainly the best of the “variations “ that I have read.

This is not fanfiction.
I need to go and downstar all my previous reviews because Mistress of Netherfield puts them all to shame. There is a content warning for graphic discussion of past severe domestic violence and non graphic discussion of a resultant miscarriage. However although the effects linger the story doesn't dwell on it in a way that would be distressing to the reader. That out of the way, Mistress of Netherfield does not disappoint in any quarter. The writing is excellent there were no noticeable typos, the plot is tight, the pacing excellent and the dialogue witty. The characterisations were fresh and yet familiar. The resolution was felicitous, but in no way forced, it left me with a warm cozy feeling without any saccharinity and included a little something I hadn't seen before but quite enjoyed (no spoilers).TLDR; the cover art looks like a real novel because it is, and you should definitely read it.

Unbelievably Outstanding!
I have edited dozens and dozens of Pride and Prejudice variations by excellent authors in the genre, including one who won Best New Author. While can't make that claim for this book, it is certainly a top contender for this year's award. I wish I could claim to have participated in its creation. I can, however, claim to be one of its most appreciative readers.Julia Winter has written a high quality variation, flavored well with canon characters placed in a novel, very believable plot. Granted, there are proofing slips, but the writing was so glorious in other respects, I simply sighed and read on, and on, and on to a satisfying ending, relishing one of the most delightful Lizzy's I've had the pleasure of meeting.Thank you so much!

Impulse buy, but well worth the cost!
This variation had a lot of substance to it, especially in how it dealt with domestic violence. Lizzy has the benefit of time, which makes for a different perspective on the issue and the author did well by introducing dual POVs. Character progression can be marked and the twists to the tale are dramatic but believable. All in all, well worth re-reading.

A real treat
I have read many very enjoyable P&P variations but this one is truly special. I particularly liked this Elizabeth who survived a terrible ordeal, even inherited and was able to live a fairly independant life, not common in these days as women were entirely dependant on men and had limited access to education and freedom. I admired how she dealt with Wickham, refusing to reward him with marriage and money. A truly impressive and admirable Elizabeth. A horrible mrs. Bennet even more despicable than miss Bingley. I hope this author will soon write more such delightful books
