Oscar's Ignorance For Ignoring This One
Simply one of the best. Regardless of how you feel about the issue of homosexuality, this is a great movie. This is also a great serial killer movie. This is also a great story to tell. Malcolm Moorman was great as Jack, the gay serial killer. His performance was Oscar worthy. All the actors brought vulnerabilities, stereotypes , prejudices to the front of A+ acting in an A+ movie. Everything was believable and realistic for the time that this movie was made, and a great watch for today. Noel Palomaria was great as the vulnerable closeted detective battling himself, his fellow officers and Jack. True slasher fans will be satisfied because this movie is a cut above the rest. Everything in the movie had purpose. The sex was not to titillate, or be gratuitous to appease the viewer, but to portray real life scenarios. The nudity, particularly the dead bodies, but including Detective Vates having sex with Jack, was perfect for this one. Had they not shown it when they did, it would have subtracted from the movie. Jack's actions had purpose , as warped as they were, as the killer.I love that there were no extraordinary productions. Nothing about the story went to far. The bar was the bar around the corner. The police station was not the super stations you see in some movies. There were no big actors, only big performances. Everything was real. This also was not just a "gay movie" out to further an agenda, while at the same time it portrayed real life ignorance and fears. As a move-great. As a slasher flick that was more than most slasherflicks-great. I have seen it time and again and will see it more times and again and again. Would love a sequel, maybe with Malcolm Noorman again as Jack the killer of gay men and Palomaria brought in as the lead detective assisting a new young detective on the case.

Coulda Been a Very Good Flic
I bought this on Amazon. Unfortunately it misses being a good movie for reasons that could have been easily rectified: 1. decrepit dwellings; the gay cop's apartment consists of a room only slightly larger than his bed with a punching bag by the door; his bathroom seems to be bigger and nicer than his whole apartment; a crappy trailer with one flowery sofa. 2. Some bad dialogue, but even worse is the delivery by the autopsy doctor, and especially by some woman in skin-tight jeans, who sounds just like a porn actress; she reminds me of the scene with Mark Wahlberg in Boogie Nights." 3. Red paint which is supposed to be blood, but never dries; day-old blood turns brown, not latex red high gloss. 3. The scenes in the gay bar are not too good. Its message of a gay cop's being harassed is important, and I would like to see it spruced up so that it could gain wider acceptance. As it is, its difficult to watch. I could not bear to watch it again to find out who the porn actress is supposed to be. It needs English subtitles because at times I could not understand the dialogue. It isn't really violent or gruesome. The "Hostel" movies are much worse and very disturbing. I'll just foist it upon someone for free. It's cheap enough.

Much Better Than Many Studio Movies
This is a great B Movie in Noir genre. Though it's obviously shot on a shoe-string budget, this never gets in the way of the flow of the drama. It's a good, cop serial killer drama that is satisfyingly acted and directed from beginning to end.I recommend it as an entertaining way, for those who love cop dramas, to spend an easy hour and a half of an evening. As for the reviewer who found it "too gay", well he/she obviously has some personal problems that should have nothing to do with appreciating a well structured, B cop movie with good acting and reasonably good cinematography. One would have to have an unusually _warped_ perception to see this movie as "porn" rather than the good B movie it is.

Hard is hard core
This is a hard core thriller with twists and turns in the plot that will keep you watching. Grisly, hard-core, gay themed, but more than that, it is good. If you are a fan of this type of movie, you should enjoy this. This is not the movie for family night. The harsh realities of street life for young gay men is portrayed well in this film. Won't give away the story here, but this is one of the best out there for gay films.

Finally, a movie I remember
Finally, a movie I remember. This was a very good movie about a gay serial killer and a LA Detective investigating the murders. Needless to say they run into each other and the Serial Killer knew the detective was gay even though he was in the closet. After several events that happened, the detective was forced to say he was gay to get off of the murders. The movie did have a couple of scenes of full frontal nudity that was nice to see for a change becaue it adds reality to the movie. I don't want to say anything more about the movie because you should rent or buy it.

Soundtrack Distorted
I have only tried playing this movie on my sony blu ray player, and the sound was distorted, making it unwatchable. The disc itself doesn't appear to be damaged. So it tells me it may be the distributor itself. I will try playing it on my computer and my non blu ray player to see if it can be viewed through those units...otherwise it's a total loss I guess. Oh well I can't really complain for a $1.50 movie but it will make me leery on ever using this seller again.

Very good! Suspense thriller.
I don't like giving away the plot of the movie, so I'll just say this movie is a mix of Silence Of The Lambs mixed with Se7en. It has a great plot. Lots of suspense, and it is rather explicit. I have the unrated directors cut. Overall it is great viewing, and a great price.

Well worth the price of admission
Hard is an extremely entertaining film that had it all for me: an attention-holding plot; reasonably-good acting; some interesting twists & turns; some eye candy; and an unexpected ending. Yeah, there were some grisly and mildly disturbing scenes, but they were integral to the plot, so they fit well. Also, I was impressed with how well the few sex scenes were woven into the overall storyline This was a very well-done film that I could watch and enjoy over and over.

Bland
I was expecting a bit more from this one, something controversial maybe, but it's all very dull and uninspired. Some of the acting performances are ok and some are iffy. Malcolm Moorman does reasonably well as the killer but Noel Palomaria as the cop doesn't impress me at all.

Gay serial killer
Some ideas are good, like the detective that is gay but does't dare coming out and at the same time prone to the dark charme of psycho gay killer, full of violence since unable to love another man without killing him after the forbidden kiss. The movie suffers of certain lack of economical means to develope it in something more than a tv movie. The cut, the photograph and the speed of the action should have been more enhanced, something like more "Collateral" wuould have be more suitable to develope this theme. Anyway it is worth to be seen.

A thriller without substance
Hard [1998 ] This movie starts off promisingly with the "serial killer" picking up a young male hitcher in a desert location with appropriate threatening dialogue and atmosphere which makes for the start of a good thriller. Unfortunately the movie does not live up to these good opening possibilities. The problem with the film for me is two fold, the first being the heavy handed message of stereo type anti gay police officers and secondly, the poorly drawn and therefore unconvincing characters involved. The result is an uneven "B" movie poorly acted and directed. This is a low budget movie with the usual "everyone helped out" cosiness and it shows. In the dreary extras section of deleted scenes the director suggests that there may be a sequel and, to everyone concerned, I respectfully suggest that you do not waste your time. Hard [1998

Hard Really Soft
Not much to say. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable.

Excellent film.
