Better range than many other top tier radios.
The media could not be loaded. I am a hunting guide who works in the Mountains of Wyoming. I have tried many different radios over the years and this one is by far the best my team or I have ever used. When hunting big game with clients, it is imperative that I am able to communicate with my team to relay information. These radios do that job phenomenally. Here are the top 3 things I like about these radios:1. These radios really are 8w. Ive spoken with several ham radio friends who have told me that they have tested the radios and they really do output as advertised. This means that these radios have the power to be able to communicate over long distances. Several times I've spoken with friends over 25 miles away with ease and perfect clarity.2. The battery life. I will often use these radios for 2-3 days at a time without having to recharge (this of course will vary depending on how much you are sending/receiving) . The extended battery pack really does make a difference and I would highly recommend it.3. These radios can take some wear and tear. I drag these things all over the mountains and deserts through brush and rocks and they still keep going. They are very durable and dropping them isn't going to hurt the radio. Here are the 2 things I would change/improve:1. The antenna. The antenna that comes with the radios is not great. I would highly recommend getting a whip antenna to put on top of these radios as it makes a large difference to your range and clarity. The one that is included works perfectly fine (hence why I have not deducted any stars); however your performance can be boosted significantly with a better antenna.2. The radios could be more water resistant. I've never had an issue with these radios in the rain and let me tell you, I have been in some downpours with them out in the wide open. Recently however I had one in my backpack and a water bottle I was carrying opened up right on top of two of these radios and completely drench them. They wouldn't have gotten any wetter if I threw them in a pool. One of the radios survived after a night in the rice bag; however the other was toast. I know ti is an unrealistic expectation for a radio to be completely waterproof but if they could be a little more water resistant it would be nice.Overall, this is an excellent radio and you really can't go wrong with it. I will continue to use these in my own business and will not be switching to a different set up any time soon. Maybe ever. If you found the review helpful, please don't forget to give me a helpful vote!

If you bought this radio to use outside the ham bands, read this.
Many people buy baofeng radios to use outside the ham bands and then are shocked to find that the radios have a transmit lock restricting them to the ham bands. Internally this radio is the same as the UV-5R.NotaRubicon Productions has a great video showing you how to "factory" reset the radio to get the functionality you want. If you're looking for that enhanced jailbroken experience then his video is what you should watch.

Good value in a dual-band HT
Let's get the negatives out of the way first:* The biggest flaw I see is poorly constructed squelch firmware. I've made the lowest threshold and finest adjustment available (via Chirp) and a squelch setting of "1" does not break for weak, but usable signals.* Lighted display: there is a choice of three colors, but the dark blue and the purple do not help us old guys who need greater contrast. I just leave orange on for all modes.* Selectivity: not measured, but is quite poor. For a $40 radio, it is about what I expected. Household electrical noises often break squelch. Can I use it as a mobile with a magmount antenna? You will be disappointed with the picket fencing and the absence of noise blanking.* It's time for a firmware revision. Along with the aforementioned squelch, the scanning functions need improve flexibility: one can only scan every channel in memory, and cannot exclude any.And the positives:* Good audio, good RF, durable case.* Pretty good scanner. Receives most analog signals easily. Others complain of speed, but for $40? Acceptable.* Broadcast FM function is OK. It's not super-sensitive, but I use it with earphones to listen to sporting events while the family is watching TV.* Battery life while monitoring or scanning is quite good. I work from home and keep it on for 10 hours a day -- the battery will last for perhaps 3 days or more. A second battery would be a good idea ($18 from Baofeng).* Decent performance. With a ground plane or a coaxial dipole at housetop level, I can hit 2M repeaters in a 30 - to- 35 mile radius. Easy to work satellites with a homebrew yagi. [Buy plenty of adapters to interface with PL259's, F-connectors, etc.]If the need arose, I would be comfortable buying another one. Radioddity customer service is hit-or-miss, but they certainly try hard. Get one, get Chirp, and get on the air!Questions? Look me up! K4GMX

Problem in the 146 band
This is my 4 Baofeng and they work well. They all seem to have a squelch issues in the 146 area. All mine do it and my buddies in different locations. We use the heck out of them but the little interference is a bit annoying.
