Wonderful book
Absolutely loved this book. Wasn’t quite what I was expecting and I’ve never watched Supervet cos I don’t like seeing animals in pain or surgery. So I think I was expecting it to be more about the nuts and bolts of his surgeries. It was actually better than that. He comes across as an incredibly sensitive guy and this book is a lot about his relationship with animals, especially his beloved Kiera and Rick O’Shea and how they literally did save his sanity and life. It made me think about how I personally relate to other people and animals and it contained a lot of soul searching. There obviously was detail about the procedures he carries out and about his aim in life of OneMedicine whereupon animals and humans are thought of in the same breath. I didn’t read his first book and don’t feel I need to now. I have got the message and can see where he is coming from. I have signed up to his Humanimal charity to receive updates and hope that he can continue with his state of the art procedures for the animals, but he really does need to get the work/life balance sorted out.

A little heavy in places
If you've read the previous book this one will come as a bit of a surprise, it's not fluffy kittens and adorable dogs this deals with the darker side of a talented vet like Fitzpatrick. There are a number of cases both Dogs and cats not all ending well but this is needed to get the premises of the book over. A veterinarians life is not all it appears on TV like the medical world there are what appears to be signs of the little green monster on Noel from other lesser vets. The book starts with him receiving a letter from the Royal Veterinary College it states that complaints have been lodged regarding over treatment of a tortoise. It revolves around the tortoise who like they do goes into hibernation, unfortunately rats don't and chew his legs off apart from one . Noel treats the tortoise eventually fitting him with prosthetic limbs., the animal goes on to have a happy life dies some years later of an unrelated disease . Now having watched and read about Professor Fitzpatrick I would be happy for him to operate on my animals or myself. The book covers his love for his pets and how these have helped him through tough times ,he is committed to his profession but that comes at a price. The book does get a little heavy in places where you can feel Noel getting depressed and questioning his own ability which is never in doubt . He writes about cases some to help the owners say goodbye but letting the animal die with dignity something we all strive for.The book gives information on the rules and regulations of veterinary practices ,there is no authority like the Human Tissue Authority (HTA) for animals which polices the use of humans tissue in medical school's and research. Noel is in favour of a body to overlook all practices because most are big commercial companies that are more about profit than the welfare or care of the animal I agree with him. Noel has put hundreds of thousands of pounds in to his practice, he trains young vets to be better and has a huge staff of nurse's ,assistants and office staff . The book is a good read you will hug your dog,cat or even your partner when you read sections of the book. Noel is against animal experiments for the sake of it, he inserts prosthetic limbs on to animals spine spaces and treats Cancer with innovative surgeries that work . He doesn't have to kill the animal to see it working he has the proof in front of him when it dies most of the owners donate the remains to look at the pathology . It appears that the RVC doesn't like this and tries it's best to haunt Noel. Noel would like to see human and veterinary medicine combined as a one medicine tent to share advances, this would save countless animals unnecessary pain been given cancer and prosthesis for human development and not animal welfare. More power to Noel and his team he cares for all his patients old or younger and doesn't right them off.

It is not light entertainment reading!
The story starts when Noel sees a boy with a dying rabbit in rural Ireland. Noel's compassion for animals and their owners starts here. It is a psychological view of why Noel took the route he did. We read about the time he fell foul of Vets, because he had operated on a tortoise, and made it more comfortable, with the owners permission. At the end of the book, Noel falls downstairs, and hears his neck crack. He spent some time in hospital, and reinforced his feelings of animals and owners suffering. He strongly believes that drugs should be tried out on sick animals, instead of being tried on healthy humans to test if they are suitable for animals.Bought this for my 84 year old Mum for Christmas. She says it is a very humbling book, written by an extremely sensitive man!

A powerful book of a personal journey
Noel bare his soul in this book, not many people are brave enough to be this open and brutal about oneself! It is a shame (and not surprising) that a professional community that do not and will not support or to celebrate such a special someone who is willing to sacrifice his life for the betterment of the animal families that he truly loves. His powerful plea of the 'One medicine' I hope will come to fruition in the future. His personal strives and achievements todate demonstrated more than just words or ideas. For those who are not brave enough to innovate, stepping up to the calls or have the talent to be of greater help to the animals in trouble, please be silent instead of professional envy.
