Staggeringly good
Any Sherlock Holmes or Poe fan would enjoy this staggeringly good tome, but even those who are not will too! It's a beautiful book, with gorgeous illustrations side by side with Volk's wonderful prose. Volk nails Holmes' voice (no mean feat, given Doyle's work prioritised Watson's), plus there's plenty of 'Easter Eggs' referring to words, stories and themes from both authors' work. In the stories themselves there are moments of true grisly horror alongside pathos, as well as meaningful commentary on race, gender, disability and culpability that will speak to modern audiences whilst also not being out of place in a period setting. Sherlock's ordeal underground - I will say no more - literally gave me nightmares. Very much recommended!

Criminally good
Absolutely wonderful. C. Auguste Dupin mentoring Sherlock Holmes through a series of strange crimes with more than a dash of the macabre. Lots here for both serious and casual fans of either figure, and plenty to love for its own sake. The ending is particularly brilliant, perfect even. I loved it. Highly recommended.

Fiendishly clever and joyously gothic
An inventive and meticulously detailed account of the genesis of Sherlock Holmes and his mentor. Stephen Volk's knowledge is encyclopedic and he writes with real devotion but pulls off the sleight of hand of being original and surprising. It's a fiendishly clever and joyously gothic book. A antidote to real life as it is currently.PS Publishing have done a beautiful job with this. It's gorgeous.
