First of all I have not downloaded the Vidiyo App and I am actually not likely to. I know that is what they are designed for but I will admit I got these more for the Minifigures than for any interest in making music videos through the App. This does make the set seem expensive, however, if you are going to be using the Vidiyo App then you have to factor in the actual licensing costs to Universal and their Artists that make the App possible by uploading their back catalogue on there.Beyond that the set is actually pretty fun.The box itself is simple to build and even comes with a little storage box for those additional beatbit tiles. The lid for this storage compartment is decoratable and each instruction leaflet gives you three options for a design. Alternatively you could make your own from the pieces included (you do get a few spares) or raid your stash and do something truely unique. The box clips together firmly and the handle feels strongly attached. You could deifnitely use the box to transport your beatbits and minifigure around with no problems. The minifigure itself is nicely detailed and has a front and back print to the torso. The accessories reflect the figure's Vidiyo role and you can easily store the figure with accessories in place in the Beat Box. The included hard plastic fairy wings are absolutely beautiful. The 16 included beatbit tiles are well printed and come in a variety of colours so you can change them out based on the image on the front or their colour. Alternatively you can use them for what they are meant for - special actions within the App. Personally I think they will be a great resource for MOcs, particularly wall art or for using as book covers or vinyl album covers.Number Of Pieces: 144Approximate Price Per Piece: £0.12Build Time: 10 Minutes

Nice construction toy with added value
Lego have recently made a few forays into the world of 'Augmented Video Reality', this being the latest attempt to break into this market. What is Augmented VR? Well simply you use an app on a supported phone/tablet to bring the models to life and in this case allow you to create a music video that you can direct by using special effects etc... generated by the phone which are overlaid onto a video you shoot which can optionally contain your kiddies or whatever. In the box you get a fairly simple kit which enables you to assemble a small cube which acts as a carry case for the minifigure character provide along with a number of 'Beatbits'. A Beatbit is a small 2x2 flat Lego tile that has an image printed on its top side. You can then take the minifigure and place him on a little stand you construct and add to this up to 12 Beatbits. You then load the Vidiyo app and scan the minifigure and its associated Beatbits, this will make the character appear in the video along with a bunch of icons that represent the Beatbits you have selected. To create your masterpiece you then select a music soundtrack, the band members (up to 3 minifigures you own) and then place them onto your 'stage'. This can be a larger Lego Vidiyo set you have available or you can simply use a table top or similar surface as your stage. At this point you can record your video which will use the soundtrack you selected and have the figures performing on your chosen stage with potentially real life people in the background. You can also direct the video by selecting icons on the screen provided from the chosen Beatbits to add special effects, graphics or performances from the figures. This all sounds quite complicated, but in reality is very easy and for the kids will be a breeze. It is possible to upload the resultant music videos to a highly moderated social media site that is run by Lego. Of course if you don't want your kids to appear on such sites this is not a requirement, just an option you have control over.In this particular package you get one figure - in this case the folk fairy, 14 random Beatbits as well as 2 exclusive Beatbits for a total of 16, the afformentioned cube case which acts as a storage box for the minifigure and the Beatbits. So effectively consider this an entry into the world of Vidiyo to test out the medium or alternatively an expansion to your collection if you already have any Vidiyo sets.As for value for money? Well based just on what you get in the set it looks on the surface as ok or even poor, but when you factor in the Augmented VR then it can deliver value if you make use of that. Of course the kiddies will love it regardless as you have the app if they like it or if not just some nice cute figures with accessories. One last thing to bear in mind is that the app has limited compatibility and requires a certain level of Android or iOS to run, but if in doubt you can download the Vidiyo app and test it before buying as it will provide you with a 'free' character to test it out.Overall I like the format, I just wish they were a bit cheaper or maybe offered more than one figure in this sort of set, a full band would have been nice for example...
