Winsor & Newton Workable Fixative Review: Very happy with it - Used this for my charcoal portrait drawing, works really well. Very happy with it, and will definitely be my go to for my charcoal drawings.. Review: Dries quick, stops smudging. However you do have to be careful not to ruin your picture by getting dust or dirt on your paper while spraying as it gets stuck on and risks damaging your drawing. Spray in a ventilated protected area as your surfaces will become sticky.

Exactly what I needed for my artwork. It gives a perfect protective finish without altering colours or texture. Quick-drying and reliable — I’ll be sticking with this one for all my future pieces.

This art fixative might be on the pricier side, but it’s far superior to cheaper sprays that can ruin your work. Designed to protect a wide range of media—soft pastels, charcoal, acrylic inks and paints—it works beautifully on different surfaces such as Bristol canvas and watercolour paper. What really impresses me is how few coats are required. Two light layers provide full, even protection, which means you don’t waste time or product, and there's no lingering strong odour or tackiness. Unlike budget options that can discolour, cloud, or stiffen artwork, this fixative preserves the true colours and textures—often even making pigments subtly pop and feel richer veronicasart.comfinearttutorials.com. On my soft pastel pieces, I noticed no noticeable sheen or shift in hues—the result was clean and vibrant, just as intended jacksonsart.comfinearttutorials.com. For charcoal and acrylic ink works, the finish remained smooth and true without any yellowing or smudging. Even on Bristol and watercolour surfaces, the fixative adhered nicely and cured quickly. In short: you pay a little more, but gain major benefits—strong protection, not so many layers, no ruined colours, and a gentle enhancement of vibrancy. If you are serious about preserving your artwork without compromising its appearance its a worth to try it.
