Gripping, powerful and disturbing
This book depicts the slow-drip process of coercive control, and how to recognise the signs when a spouse is psychologically manipulating their partner. I found it shocking, but at the same time educational. In fact this is two stories: one of the reporter, Esme; second, the story of Simone, the convicted murderess at the heart of her true crime podcast series.Simone is in prison for killing her husband, Grant. But while some members of the public view her as a vicious cold-blooded killer, there is a succession of events leading up to the crime that left me cold. In the first episode, Simone relates how he drove a wedge between her and her mother, (who later died). But only after her death, did she discover how cruelly he engineered their estrangement:“… I said nothing to him. I knew he would just make me feel like it was all in my head. He did that all the time.”This marks the advent of a marriage in which Grant slowly and methodically isolates Simone from family, friends and neighbours. Then, once under his control, subjects her to a life of humiliation and fear.At the same time, Esme has her own battles, from protecting her vulnerable son, to acting as referee between ex husband, Owen and her sister. Given she and Owen are separated, he spends a lot of time in her house; but as Simone’s story unfolds, she begins to question the health of their relationship. So, when Esme’s sister goes missing, Owen seems the most obvious suspect to me. Then an investigation begins, in which Esme discovers secrets about her ex that will change everything. There is a twist in this book that joins both stories. Nothing is straight-forward and as the knots of Simone’s story unravel, the truth is finally exposed and something I never expected. It’s a complex book and brilliantly written.

3 out of 5 from me
Not as good as other titles I have read from the same author. Found it all a bit too unbelievable in this one, sorry. Won’t put me off trying another KL Slater book though

Amazing book
Wow K. L. Slater has done it again with another amazing book! This was a little different from her other books as it featured the main character Esme Fox podcasting her interviews with Simone who was convicted of murdering her husband some time ago. During those interviews, we see that both Simone’s and Esme’s lives were similar.Esme has a lot going on in her life, recently separating from her husband who keeps trying to come back on the excuse their son needs him, her son who was the victim of a hit and run causing lifelong problems with no one being caught, and now her sister has gone missing. Just when it cannot get any worse, when her husband is bought in for questioning, her in-laws turn up.I really enjoyed reading this, it kept me guessing throughout several incidents and when I learned who did what, I was shocked.K. L. Slater is one of my favourite authors, she has a way of pulling me in from early on, keeping me up late at night and leaving me on the edge of my seat for the entire read.

Underwhelming
Compared with all the other books by this great author, I found The Evidence rather low key and underwhelming. Another reader mentions that it feels as if it could be a different author and I totally agree. Even the turns and repetition of phrase are so unlike Ms Slater’s previous work.

A Good Read
I did enjoy this once I got used to the podcasts. Not sure some of the storyline is plausible but it's a good read. The ending was maybe a bit hurried and contrived, but on the whole a good read.
