By the Great Hornspoon!

I did this as a read aloud with my four boys, ages 8-13. They all really enjoyed it, and so did I. My boys were pretty mad at a part in the last chapter of the book, but still we loved the happy ending and the fun adventures throughout the story.

I love this awesome and adventurous book! It taught me to be more patient in life and to find the good in everything. In the beginning, they're looking for gold in the gold rush. They waiting so long, but finally they strike it rich! A little later, they loose all their gold. But thanks to the creativity in this book, they gain it all back. By the Great Horn Spoon was a wonderful book for me and my friends. It has so much adventure that you don't know what's coming next. I like the characters names like Pitch Pine Billy and Mr. Azariah Jones. I like all of them and all the adventure. I hope you read this book because of this review. I love this book and I hope you do too!

My daughter was forced to read this book TWICE. Since we live in California, this book is considered curriculum. It's writing style was difficult/boring for 3rd graders. The overall story was fun, but reading the entire book was not so great for kids. If you're forced to read it, you have no choice.

I had never heard of the Gold Rush, but after reading this book, I feel like I know more about it than most people. The author does a really good job of making the adventures feel real and even though it is historical fiction, the fourth grade language is easy to understand. I am really glad that I read this book!

Great 4th grade book. It’s full of fun and adventure.

My 4th-grade daughter loved the book! Her teacher wanted the kids to read along with her and put annotations as they were reading, so I bought the book for her. My daughter is tough to please when it comes to finding something that she likes to read. But, she did say that it was a good book! She took an AR quiz and got 100%! =)

I liked that Jack and Praise Worthy did not strike it rich but instead got their fortune in a different way. I did not like the start so much because it was kind of plain and nothing so special happened. Over all I rate this book a 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book! I ordered this copy to replace a tattered old copy. This is such a fun story about a boy and his butler going on an adventure to the California Gold Rush. I read it aloud when my older kids were younger. I tried to read it to my youngest daughter but she just took the book to finish it herself.I really love the characters in this book especially Praiseworthy, the butler. He's such a perfectly drawn character and I like to see how he responds to events. As a teacher, I think this book is worthy of any book shelf. Also, it will make a great read aloud to accompany a unit on the gold rush. It does a great, but humorous job, of showing how a gold rush can affect individuals or a community.Basically, it's a fun story that my kids and I love to read.

A terrific tale...I enjoyed it as much as my grand daughter...The scene setting in the gold fields is super...
