Boogie on the move
First of all I have not downloaded the Vidiyo App and I am actually not likely to. I know that is what they are designed for but I will admit I got these more for the Minifigures than for any interest in making music videos through the App. This does make the set seem expensive, however, if you are going to be using the Vidiyo App then you have to factor in the actual licensing costs to Universal and their Artists that make the App possible by uploading their back catalogue on there. The 16 included beatbit tiles are well printed and come in a variety of colours so you can change them out based on the image on the front or their colour. Alternatively you can use them for what they are meant for - special actions within the App. Personally I think they will be a great resource for MOcs, particularly wall art or for using as book covers or vinyl album covers.Beyond that the set is actually pretty fun.You get two highly detailed minifigures with the set - a bass bot and a sing bot. They are both really cute and different to any of the existing characters within the Vidiyo range. There is also a small "stand" that takes one character and that you can add the beatbit tiles too for use in the app. Not too sure why they didn't incorporate tile locations within the stage to be honest as surely the whole point is to use your scene within the app and have it populate your videos. The stage itself is a lot of fun and is an 8 stud wide limousine with a stage plopped on top of it. Strangely, this is a really effective design choice and it works really well. Aesthetically I really do love the look of the limo - after all it does have a hot tub in the back! The little touches are fun on this - down to a DJ deck in the cab of the vehicle - especially the use of the gear stick piece as a tonearm (I know they have done this in other sets but as this is a car it seemed even more fitting). There are two sides to the stage and some sections spin round so you can change the scene depending on your mood or music choice. The front is the gold and white robot and the detailing on this is really spot on and it is definitely my favourite of the two. The reverse has a blue and grey robot that looks a little unsettling. You can spin the icon box at the top to mix and match them so you can always have your favourite side on display. The speakers also rotate and have matching, colour co-ordinated designs to the icon on the topbox.Overall a fun build that does look good on display and also has play value - even if it is just because it is a car!Number Of Pieces: 387Approximate Price Per Piece: £0.06Build Time: 45 Minutes

Lego AR for the YouTube generation
The influence of Daft Punk can be felt quite strongly in this rather crazy set that attempts to keep Lego relevant to the YouTube generation, and does a pretty good job of it.The side of it that Lego still can’t quite perfect, unfortunately, is the app. It’s doing a lot of clever AR stuff on-the-fly and it’s amazing that it can work in real-time to the extent that it does- but unfortunately it’s still plagued by sudden crashes (that lose any recordings you were in the middle of), and a high tech spec requirement that means it won’t install on older and cheaper phones, which is unfortunate as it’s the older and cheaper phones that we’re willing to let the kids play with. But when it does work, it’s a lot of fun. The tracking is mostly great, the music selection is quite impressive with a good selection of licensed tunes, and when you get a good working video, there’s plenty of LOL moments. This set is a little more expensive than other Vidiyo sets because of the hiphop car, but in a way this makes it feel like better value, because proportionally more of the cost is returned as plastic pieces rather than app development. It’s a curiously weird little car, in keeping with the oddly gothic and pointy trends showing up in Lego Hidden Side for example. It’s hard to adapt it whilst keeping it as a car, but once it’s time for a full disassembly, there are some quite fun and characterful pieces included. The RRP is over twenty quid but it’s priced lower than that at time of writing, and on that basis I’d recommend it as a bit of fun that gives Lego a new twist- but to use it, you’ll need to be patient with app crashes, and be willing to share the best smartphone in your house with the kids.

Lego meets HipHop meets Music Video creativity...
The “VIDIYO Robo HipHop Car Music Video Maker Set” (Model# 43112) is an innovative and creative Lego set that allows your kids to create their very own “Lego Music Videos” with the use of this funky supped up Hip Hop Car and the augmented reality app you can download for free. The Lego kit itself is designed for kids from the age of 7 upwards. The car model is pretty simple to make up, and the enclosed instruction manual is incredibly easy to follow for youngsters. So, all good there. The app is easily downloaded onto your phone from searching for Lego Vidiyo. Using the app is again very straight forward. The end results are really quite spectacular too. My eleven year old daughter has had a huge amount of fun putting together wicked videos with the set and the app. It’s really designed for this combined use, and works perfectly. The model itself is a wacky over-the-top monstrosity of Hip Hop excess. Although my daughter thinks it’s super cool. There’s loads of bits and accessories and random details all over the place with this set. I have to admit, there’s a lot of effort gone into designing it. I am impressed. So all in all, if your kid likes Lego and likes YouTube, music or creating videos – this might well be the ideal set for them. My daughter loves all of the above, so absolutely loved it.
