I make custom coasters with laser engraved sayings or drawings. I've tried both marble and slate, and these slate ones are much better than marble due to how the laser etches the surface. I don't understand all of the specifics, but essentially there's more contrast on the slate coasters than the marble ones, and the dark surface with the lighter etched portion looks kinda cool.The photo is a screenshot from video during engraving. The coaster is a dark gray, not black, but much darker than what shows here.

Yes, they are super aesthetically pleasing and not bulky. But since they are rock, they do not absorb any liquid and the little pads on the bottom are not evenly placed so they tilt easily.

It is ceramic. The moisture runs right off it like this material naturally does. Add a paper towel to it.

While the products are high-quality and as described, they are raw and natural stone products only slightly adapted to be coasters. Caveat: Out of the box and with normal handling these coasters have a tendency to release small shards of sharp slate. These easily get stuck in skin or other materials, and they hurt. Further, if they are dropped/thrown or if a heavy weight (such as a book or other coffee table item) falls on them, they can shatter, releasing a huge number of shards. They are beautiful, but that beauty comes with the potential for extreme pain.I would not purchase again.
