Q: A major beginner question... Do these bulbs (15w) fit into any standard lamp, like a desk lamp, for example? Thank you!

They would fit, but not provide directed heat as well as if they were in the proper heat lamp (dome lamp)

Q: Whats the life time on these bulbs?

I think it depends on the individual bulb you happen to get. I'm still using the first one I ordered which was over a year ago. They don't cost much, so I suggest buying two that way you always have a backup.

Q: How do you determine whether you need a 50 or a 75 watt bulb?

It was hard for me to know for sure. It depends on how much heat you need and how big the cage is. I have a 12x12x18 and can lower my lamp for more heat. It raises the temperature about 5 degrees. Not a lot of heat from this one.

Q: Does it give off heat?

Yes, it is meant to give off heat in basically a "black" Light hat cannot be seen.
