Forever Laid Back (plus bonus material)
One thing I've noticed about buying music ever since the '60s....Its a never ending history lesson, usually morphing into the theory of realativity!! (It's ALL realative, right?)The singer-songwriter genre of the '70s REALLY made an impression on me, as well as 90% of my peers. And, along with the others, John Cale stands in rare form, smooth from beginning to end! This guy is where the term "laid back" originated, and if you don't understand that, start with his album "Naturally" and listen on from there! Still don't understand? You're in the wrong club....Many artists, such as Mr. Clapton, have done well with this guys music. But, to truly appreciate it, well then, go to the source! For EXTRA fun, buy an album called "The Road To Escondido"....nothing less than a collective effort between Mr. Cale and Mr. Clapton! This will seal the deal! This DVD is a collection of just what an "Everyman" JJ Cale was. If you're in to music, like I am, you'll appreciate how and where this guy came from....and where he went! IMHO, this man was both an important AND integral part of the music that has become the soundtrack to my life, as well as many others, and I like to know about all these things! And now, after WATCHING and LISTENING a couple times....I DO! (And am better for it!). YOU should know, too!(And, just to clear the air, when I mentioned in the above review that you should "buy" the album I mentioned, I really meant just that. Again, IMHO, there is too much downloading of music going on in this world today. The artists "intellectual properties" are seriously being compromised in doing this, as well as the appreciation of the music itself! As like anything else, it takes time and talent to create, and I believe the people who do so are entitled to reap their just rewards for doing so! Besides....I, FOR ONE, MISS THE RECORD STORE AND THAT CONCEPT OF MUSIC MARKETING!! LETS GET BACK TO BASICS..AGAIN!)

Absolutely terrific, in so many ways!
If you like JJ Cale, or if you like some of his songs (e.g. "After Midnight", "Cocaine", "They Call Me the Breeze", "Traveling Light", and more), or if you have heard of him, and are curious, you must have this DVD. It has continuous, crisp and beautiful music (JJ engineered the re-recording himself) - I had to continually remind myself that it is all his music, generous in-depth interviews, beautiful photography (the documentary follows him and his band touring through the Southwest and Colorado), and much more. Every song played in snippets throughout the body of the documentary is played completely after the documentary finishes, so it goes on and on after the end of the doc. The sound is superlative, some of the best sound engineering I have ever heard of JJ. Most of the music is him and his wonderful touring band playing live, but he plays a lot of songs solo acoustic as well, in different settings. He shows his guitar chops, and his performing skill, and the depth of his songwriting catalogue. The interviews show him to be a nice, down-to-earth, reflective guy, happy to have the ability to make a living playing songs with his long-time friends in front of an appreciative audience he embraces. Great interview, and jamming onstage together, with Eric Clapton as well. This is a must-own!

Buy it, you'll love it
I discovered John Cale (known as J.J. Cale) way back in the early seventies after the release of his first album, Naturally. I have followed his career ever since. This is a well put together documentary of J.J. and his music. I met J.J. one night when he was playing a gig in Kansas City in the mid 1990's. His performance was sold out so I went to his touring bus parked outside in Westport and banged on the window holding a note that said I couldn't get into the concert. He came out of the bus and we chatted for a few minutes and I explained that he was sold out and how bad my wife and I wanted to see him. He got a roadie to take us in the back way of the concert and fetched a table and two chairs and seated us right in front of the stage, no charge. Wow, what an experience and a great guy. My dream for years was to get him to come to my home town in Kansas for a performance but that is a lost dream now since he passed away in 2013. R.I.P J.J. I have watched this DVD dozens of times and always find something I hadn't noticed before. I don't believe there is an artist out there that compares to the sound he created.

J.J. Cale, purveyor of cool guitar sounds
This is a beautifully constructed documentary on J. J. Cale, a man with exposure to many but a man who hardly anybody knows much about. This guy could have invented the term "laid back." As the story progresses, you learn why Mr. Cale had that signature sound unlike any other - he basically invented it in the recording studio... which in one case was a trailer he lived in for a number of years. No one is quite sure as to exactly how he does it and he's not telling... but he sure is playing!Guitar is an instrument that gets its rich sound from how the player approaches it - the sound is in the player's hands for the most part. Strings, pickups, amps - all affect the sound but the texture of the notes comes from the musician. We get to see that here in detail. Simple songs well written and well played and then throw in some way cool guitar sounds to boot. The sound is clean and tight, and the video quality is excellent as well. I first viewed my copy on a higher quality 37" diagonal plasma screen and it was gorgeous - colors were rich and saturated and the overall sound was clear and very well defined. If you liked the songs "Cocaine", "Call Me the Breeze" and "Crazy Mama", you'll come to treasure this DVD.

Excellent documentaire
Très intéressant quand on est concerné par le sujet: JJ Cale. Il se dégage un esprit général étonnant, des beaux moments musicaux, et toute une philosophie de vie rare et attachante.

Superior piece of work
The 127-minute documentary offers a solid overview of what it must have been like to be a musician who grows up in once-prosperous mid-America, gets a peek at stardom, maintains his integrity, survives the life of his choosing. Superior camerawork and sound. The dvd reflects John Cale very well: the Special Features section is a small cache of wonders that should make music fans smile.
