Roscoe Riley Rules #1: Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs

My 6 and 7 yo's love this book
***quick review***"Roscoe Riley's Never Glue Your Friends To Chairs" made my children sat in their chairs, laughing out loud and giggling, while they took turns reading to each other. They did not want to stop reading until the book is over!A cute book that is charming and inventive with short chapters and attention grabbing sentences along with well illustrations. It is also a book that parents will also enjoy reading to(or along with) their children!~~~~~~~~~~~~***more detailed review***- the main and a little bit about Roscoe himself -Roscoe says so himself, he doesn't like to find ways to get into trouble, trouble has a way of finding him.He describes what he likes and what he doesn't like. And "he" is just like everyone else, a "normal" kid.He was just trying to help out his teacher, by gluing his class-mates to their chairs with Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue!- the cute stuff(a couple of examples) -"head bobbles"- the ten knees on a bee's head (Antennae)"h,i,j,k, ellen Emmo Peed..." (Who is Ellen Emmo? Well, it's all explained in the Kindergarten! weren't you paying attention?)- for my kids, this is... -my son is more of a reader than my daughter, he is 6 and she is 7. They both read above their grade levels but it is still a challenge to try to get them to read on their own. Whenever I would mention reading time for them, they would get that "Zombie" stare and at times, my daughter would even get tears in her eyes because she'd rather watch TV.And it would take them about 10 minutes to get settled down and once we all start to read, it takes a lot of effort to try to get their attention or try to get them to make an effort to read the words that they don't know or understand. But Roscoe Riley (along with a few other books) had not only made them paid attention. They fight and argue over who will READ the WHOLE book. They giggle and laugh throughout the book and they want to discuss the book. What is good for us parents is that this book takes a light hearted look at everyday issues most kids have that usually get them into trouble with including punishment(s) and why they are needed even though kids DON'T usually try to get into trouble.while it is not a hard book to read, it introduces more advanced words such as "permanant" and "antennae" (as a visual words). My kids absolutely love this book and are already asking for other books in this series. The author wrote perfectly from a child's perspective that is intuitive, funny, yet serious (gluing children into their chairs is NOT recommended, said Roscoe from the first chapter)- Miscellaneous -There are 13 short chapters in this book. Took about a couple of hours for my children to read to each other (They usually read 20 minutes a day, and usually try to bargain out of their daily reading into 10 or 15 minutes, they were "glued" in their chairs and read the entire book!).I bought of them a kindle touch this Christmas and downloaded this book to their kindles. The text are easy to read and the artwork didn't suffer into the black and white transition.I can't say enough good stuff about this book. My wife and I kept on looking at each other as our two kids laughed and giggled through the WHOLE book in one sitting. We kept on asking ourselves, who are these children?!Highly recommended and I plan on buying other books from the Roscoe Riley series.

Great read with fun reader empathy
I am 73 years old and tried this book. Katherine Applegate's main character, Roscoe Riley caught me right from the beginning and took me back to age 6 or so as he is in "Time Out," and goes on to explain how he got there. I'm hooked into the read as Roscoe says, "I was just trying to help out my teacher."How was I supposed to know you shouldn't glue people to chairs?"With Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue?"How many tubes do you have and in how many variations?Roscoe goes on to tell about getting ready for school and a special Parent's Day presentation that needs a little help. As Roscoe and mom are preparing lunch he says that he needs scissors, goo [sic] sticks and paper.Mom directs Roscoe to the off-limits junk drawer and I am hooked completely with,"It's like a pirate treasure chest."Only with no rubies."I opened the drawer."I looked inside."Wow, I thought. This drawer is full of cool stuff!"And that's when all my troubles started"And I was taken into the drawer and the story. The rest is just fun with adventure and what-will-happen next.I have three more of Katherine Applegate's 7 or 8 Roscoe Riley Rules books. It is just pure fun, real life without tough words. This is really fantabulous for those of us with great kids and even better grand kids and that kid who is reading this review.Download it today, tomorrow for sure.

Good chapter book for early fluent readers
I bought this book for my 8 years old reluctant reader. I wanted to find chapter book series my child could enjoy reading independently. At first he was hesitant when he saw the pages. I told him to just read for 15 minutes then stop and continue reading the next day for another 15 minutes until he completes the book. He agreed. He found it funny and he continued reading longer than 15 minutes. I consider this book a winner to get my son to enjoy reading chapter books series. The language is written for early fluent readers to understand but not too simple to be boring. The plot is something school age kids can relate to. It is guided reading level L, DRA level 24.I would recommend this book to get kids interested in chapter book series.

Time-out is a strategy used in many classrooms for helping children learn and practice self-control.For safety reasons, the time-out area needs to be visible to the teacher from anywhere in the room.この第一巻は、副題が'Never Glue Your Friends to Chairs'です。
