Blast from the Past from a Great Music Writer/Critic
I first read Gleason's work in the early Rolling Stone years, as he was one of the founders of the magazine. Even when I may have disagreed with him (seldom), it was always interesting, enlightened prose on notes and players. Getting his musical impressions in one book is a treat. Along with his jazz writings, also collected now in one other volume, is another welcome addition. Check out his "Conversations in Jazz" for the full Gleason treatment. For his time, or all time, he was a master of music writing, which is, as Thelonious Monk said: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." Gleason could apparently dance about architecture. Check him out and see.
