11+ Creative Writing: A Technique Guide (Accolade On 11 Plus)

As a mum to a child in year 5, I feel this is a fabulous book to help her prep for the creative writing part of 11+ exam, which I know she struggles with the most. This book is structured and what I like most is the fact that each chapter focuses on a particular form of writing style and teaches my daughter to distinguish between them and how to use different techniques to approach the task at hand - something which I don’t think competitor books have done as well. As mentioned by a few of the other reviewers, each topic starts with section with a task ahead, an example on how best to write according to the task set, followed by guidance. It is an advanced book with advanced imagery which One could argue is slightly difficult for a 9/10 year old to comprehend, however this can only be determined on a case by case basis and in my daughters case, she was able to see beyond the initial images to decipher the meaning (which is what is intended by the authors)It is clear the book focuses on what skills and standard are expected in an 11+ exam and I would recommend this book as suitable reference material to help with any child's 11+ prep.

I thought the inclusion of this piece of work by Hieronymus Bosch totally inappropriate for analysis by nine and ten year olds. I could think of more age appropriate texts than from H G Wells' The Isle of Dr Moreau. I'll be looking for a different resource...

As a mum who need to help my daughter to prepare 11+, I found that teaching her creative writing is so the most challenging part. Instead of tell her what to write sentence by sentence, I found that this book gave us an idea of how to guide and discuss with our kids in most of the topics in 11+.

Difficult but good for top schools.

Its helped my daughter in her creative writing

Very well structured and layout, easy to understand.

This book presumes the pupil knows how to use writing techniques, but it does state that. It points out some obvious points in an eloquent way, whilst showing model pieces of work. I would personally say that this tool is more appropriate for Year 5 pupils.
