Phantom Thread [Blu-ray]

Bit disappointing
Of course, the acting here is faultless starring the amazing DDL, and the costumes, scenery and cinematography are all top class. However, in my view the story is too much of a psychiatrist's wet dream - alluding to the power/control/sexuality interplay (dominance and submissiveness) between mother/son, brother/sister and father/daughter relationships. This is dealt with actually quite brilliantly and subtly, yet the film doesn't actually go anywhere. Just when it feels that there is going to be a notable twist and some real drama, it kind of fizzles out. And, in the end I was left feeling like I'd just watched a potentially classic film, but that nothing had really happened and the moment it had finished I'd almost forgotten all about it. That's just my view mind. Still, worth watching for the acting alone.

Nice to look at but a bit strange.
I didn't enjoy it,well acted and scripted, beautiful costumes-- but I couldn't feel any sympathy with the characters.

Very enjoyable
Great acting. Interesting observation on human behaviour. Wonderful sense of time and place. A pleasure to watch a well paced film without incessant dialogue or constant scene changes.

Strange but somewhat compelling film
Of course, Daniel Day-Lewis can capture and project the intensity of a soul in distress, in this case an autistic genius of a modise, in the old sense, a fashionista dress-maker to the wealthy influencers of 1950s London. He is about to be a victim of the Gucci/Quant/Chanel celeb tsunami but that is only given the most passing reference here; the real tragedy is his completely unsatisfying relationship with his pretty young German wife, whom he cannot appreciate beyond her role as muse. She is an imposition on his unhealthily close working relationship with his own sister, and he lives in the shadow of his long-dead mother, but this is no Gothic horror. Instead, it is a long, languid, Bergmanesque tour de force about a toxic relationship, the toxicity of which mushrooms to the level of a bad joke. We are invited to smile, here and there, but the real purpose is to be unsettling. It succeeds brilliantly.

Day-Lewis & an Unlikely Love Story
Possibly Daniel Day-Lewis's final role, so I had to view. I was not disappointed. He is quite astonishing in this, as he always has been. Quite a peculiar narrative but the ambience, the music, the design & much else were most persuasive. An unlikely love story but who cares when it is so sumptuously conveyed.

Superb film
I came across this film through my wife and daughter and I wasn't disappointed. Daniel Day Lewis once again demonstrated his ability to take over the character he's playing. The periods of silence and pauses are so well executed. So different to the high speed and frequently illegible dialogue in so many mainstream films.

Paul Thomas Anderson is the most important contemporary filmmaker
Phantom Thread will forever be known as the last film Daniel Day-Lewis acted in, and he is utterly mesmerising as the OCD, impatient and childish Reynolds Woodcock (a character he helped name). Set in the glamour of post-war London, Reynolds is one of the most lavish dressmakers around, and his delicately formulated world that allows for casual female acquaintances to come and go is bulldozed by Alma, a soft-spoken immigrant, and the love she brings.Beautifully scored by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead fame, Phantom Thread is another landmark achievement for writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson, who reunites ten years on with Day-Lewis after his Oscar-winning turn in There Will Be Blood.
