For Completists Only
Every once in a while I come across and album that says “you’re spending too much time & money on digital music on Amazon,” and this may be one of those albums. That being said, that this is billed as the “Complete Bang Sessions,” isn’t far from the truth. Granted, you can find the majority of this collection under several different titles on Amazon, you won’t find the “nonsense” song anywhere else but on this album. Even as I try to justify my own purchase of this particular collection, I can say that this is certainly one for the completists. In the end, the “nonsense” songs are amusing, if not interesting in the sense that I can’t believe they were even considered acceptable recordings so that Van could “fulfill” his contract. However, whether or not they are actually worth the extra 8 bucks you have to spend to own them, may be up to the individual. For me, they will be buried in the mix, and I will try to forget I just wasted 16 dollars on a collection I already own for 8.

the Definitive Collection
Still getting a lot of use out of this collection, especially at school where it demonstrates the concept of Contractual Obligation Album in a very amusing way. Love Chicka-Coo and Ringworm.

4 stars means "I like it," but . . . .
Disclosure: I got this free through Amazon Prime, solely for the 31 brief cuts of contractual obligation filler. I wonder if Jonathan Richman listened to them. Anyway, I don't think they're available elsewhere*, and it's good to hear a ripped-off artist let it all hang out in the boss's studio at least once.Is that hypocritical, since I didn't pay for it and probably wouldn't buy it at full price once I'd heard it (but would certainly pick it up from the remainder bin)? Isn't Van's point that he'd given them full value already, and his effort was to ensure they got as little as possible thereafter? Well, what about Van's royalties, then? But I go along with the other enthusiasts here. You certainly should have a good idea of what you're in for before you buy. There may be better ways to get the first 18 cuts.*edit: This is false. Amazon says they are on vinyl on the Cleopatra label.

Beware this garbage. This a collection of the same songs recorded ...
Beware this garbage. This a collection of the same songs recorded by Van in New York in 1967. This is the record deal that jaded him to the music industry for life. This group of songs gets released under various names annually. You''ll find the same collection of songs under various names here on Amazon. this set includes about 20 nonsense songs Van recorded to complete his commitments to this label so he could go on to Warner Brothers. Set your money on fire if you want to waste it. This collection will just make you as mad as Van is at this record label.
