The authors do a magnificent job of applying Taibi Kahler's Process Communication Model to the real life interactions of his 6 personality types. They clearly identify the positive characteristics of each personality type, their respective psychological needs, and what happens when these needs are met both positively and negatively in the classroom. The PCM model allows for the shaping of personalities through individual life experiences, yet the specific psychological needs of each personality type are shown to be predictable, observable, behaviors.Based on the verified PCM psychological needs and strengths of each of the 6 personality types, the authors identify the 3 most likely types to be drawn into the teaching profession. They also point out how these needs and strengths can result in miscommunication with students whose needs and strengths are not the same, and they identify these 3 personality types.Significant help is provided to assist assessing our own unique personality structure. This looks much like a 6 floor condominium with each personality type floor placed sequentially by order of preference. The advantages of applying the PCM model in the classroom became evident. Not only can a teacher identify their own personality type, but also determine an intervention strategy to channel communication with students who exhibit a different personality type. The authors presented teacher-student personality type miscommunication scenarios and then introduced PCM techniques to re-establish communication. I found the cause and effect analyses of these miscommunication situations to be particularly insightful. Obviously, the intervention applications of PCM extend beyond the classroom into our families, marriages, friends, and colleagues.

I purchased this book after attending a training on the topic. It expands on each personality type, and has already helped me make a difference with some of the students in my classroom. It has a lot of information that applies to adults as well. A slight negative for me was that most of the examples are drawn from the high school level. I teach 1st and 2nd graders, so that part wasn't so relevant, but overall this was well worth the money.

I wish I had read this book before I retired from teaching! I had heard about PCM before, but hadn't really grasped its application in the classroom. A book about teaching written by teachers, it links PCM to learning styles and multiple intelligences. I am recommending it to all my friends who are still in education and to my children who are raising the grandchildren. Wonderful ideas on motivating the students and retaining your sanity as a teacher.

This book is a great primer for teachers to use to effectively connect to meet the diverse needs of students.

Good for parents as well as teachers. If you follow what the book is saying, you can get through to those young people that seem impossible.
