Magnesium Fire Starter Bar (Black) Light a fire even in the wettest conditions! Magnesium burns at over 3500 degrees Fahrenheit. Just shave into a pile and strike the attached ferro bar to ignite. Based on our experience and testing: Scrape the black paint off the attached ferro bar before attempting to strike. Apply adequate pressure to ferro bar while striking to produce sufficient sparks. Hold the bar close, but not TOO close, to the tinder bundle while striking. If you hold it too close you may hit your tinder bundle and mag pile with your hand, causing you to have to start over again. Be sure to ignite dry grass or bird's nest tinder, not sticks or twigs(kindling). Instructions: Gather tinder. Use the serrated edge of the striker to scrape along the length of the magnesium rod to create a shavings pile. Aim the bar at the shavings pile, then press the striker firmly against the ferro bar and slide downward to create sparks. Continue to slide the striker against the flint until the sparks land on the shavings pile and ignite it. First-time use: For the best results, use the striker to scrape the protective top layer of paint from the ferro bar before attempting to create sparks.
