The clef is phrased into what is known as a sense of 3⁄2 (avicle clave) or 2⁄3 (inverted cleav). That is, three knocks, then two hits, two hits, then three hits. The claves are the traditional instruments used to play the clef and are composed of two sticks that are played together to achieve a crisp, cracked sound.
