is this really a stainless steel brushed finish? purchased one from oster, and the finish when unpacked was bright chrome.....help please !!!

NO, IT IS NEITHER CHROME NOR STAINLESS STEEL..IT IS A PLASTIC STAINLESS STEEL LOOKING OVERLAY,OVER THE PLASTIC MOTOR CASE..I TOO WAS FOOLED BY THE PICTURE AND A BIT DISAPPOINTD WHEN I OPENED THE BOX..THE BLENDER MOTOR IS STRONG HOWEVER,AND THE BLADES ARE SHARP,,SO I GUESS THE EXTERIOR IS NOT AS IMPORTANT...

I'm not really sure how to put this blender together. I think I've got it right, but it isn't like other blenders I've owned. Those I simply twist the glass jar into the base and connect it to the blender motor. This one has more flimsy parts that I don't really enjoy having to take apart and re-assemble every time …

Up against the glass base, the gray rubbery gasket will be placed. This keeps the liquid from oozing out the bottom. Then place the steel blades inside the glass jar, from the bottom, with the gray gasket in between the glass jar and the round base of the steel blades. Last comes the black plastic bottom, which screws on---it should screw on easily if placed right. Make sure it is tight.Then place the whole assembled jar onto the motor base and rotate the jar slightly, until it settles into the motor base. If done correctly, the blender will run smoothly when you push a button.Don't forget the lid!

Can this be used as a whisk? Like mashed potatoes?

I wouldn't use it as a wisk neccesarily...but yes you could put cooked potatoes in it but you will get potato soup before you get mashed potatoes.

We purchased this blender quite some time ago and it handles everything we throw at it excellently. I really like the fact that it has a glass carafe which is very easy to clean. It's a really good old-fashioned value for your money.

Buttons feel really cheap. Actually, most of the plastic parts are made this way. Only sturdy parts are the metal ones. The jug is a really weird shape. I returned it because they sent me wrong parts with it, but I don't think I'd keep it anyway. Also it has US power plug so to use it you need an additional converter. Also it's really loud. I expected it to be a superb quality for this money, but I'm really disappointed. Not worth the money for sure.
