5 star content, but the Kindle edition is full of typos
As a spiritual work, this is a profound masterpiece. MacDonald preaches with heart, a clear love of his faith, and a rhetorical edge on par with any of his infernalist peers. MacDonald's vision of God's ultimate victory and reconciliation of all things is at once supremely hopeful, yet also laced with a grand terror which gives full meaning to the fear of God - something universalists are often accused of discarding. This is the most holistic and sustaining spiritual writing I have ever encountered outside of Scripture itself.Unfortunately, the Kindle version is riddled with OCR typos, which do somewhat hamper the meaning of the text. I hope the physical versions are better edited, as I'm sure to be purchasing one soon given how deeply meaningful this book has become to my faith.

Unspoken Sermons
I have read hundreds of books dealing with every aspect of Christianity, religion, theology and philosophy. I also have a degree in theology. In my opinion this book has had more impact on my life then the sum of the others I have read combined! C.S. Lewis considered MacDonald his master and I never understood why until I read this collection. It is the best, most impacting book I have ever read. It can be a hard read at times but don't let that stop you because it's well worth it! I never write reviews on anything; I have been impacted so strongly by this book I had to let everyone know how great it is and is a must read for anyone! If you are a seeker of truth and are ready for real answers in your life than this is the book for you. This is by far the best collection I have ever read. It changed my life and would wager any amount of money you will find a similar response. Don't even think about it; Just get it!!!

A Man Close to Jesus’ Heart
This is a great book of theology. It is written so that each sermon continues a thought contained in the preceding chapter, but each text can be read in isolation, too. George MacDonald makes compelling arguments opposing some of the traditional tenents of Calvinism; the sermons on justification and God‘s wrath point towards some sort of Universalism a more knowledgeable theologian than I could probably explain.I love this sermon series. I agree with C.S. Lewis that George MacDonald understands Jesus‘ heart better than most. Something that really changed my perspective is MacDonald’s charge to Christians to never argue for some biblical truth of which you yourself doubt it’s veracity, lest you lead another to believe a false god. He argues it is better to wait until the truth is made clear to you or perhaps it will never be; but in any case, it is worse to not know Jesus than believe in a monstrous false Jesus.

Good paperback format for George MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons
See the related photos, as this review specifically concerns a particular paperback edition (I noticed that some of the reviews of Unspoken Sermons are a mix of different editions). If you're familiar with George MacDonald's Unspoken Sermons and would like a personal copy of Volumes 1-3 in one book, this one so far seems to be a good choice. Since this text is in the public domain, there are lots of independently published copies available out there, but the font and formatting choices in a lot of these other paperback editions are less than ideal (compare various 'Look Inside' feature, if available). This one, however, is aesthetically pleasing in both font selection and layout, and should prove to be very readable.I did a quick comparison with the free Kindle edition, and from the few examples I saw, italicized words match in both editions. The only flaw I noticed is cosmetic--a white edge on the lower right of the cover, which appears to be a slight manufacturing error related to trimming the final product (see photo).Note that this is *not* a review of the content of the book, but of the format specifically. See the free Kindle edition and other reviews regarding content.

Nice reading version of the complete 3 vol set
This is a good reading version. It is closer to letter size pages than a traditional trade paperback. The physical quality is good. I personally miss a table of contents, but as a reader version it is a very good value. MacDonald's language has been contemporized in what feels to me just about a perfect way. Purist might disagree, but his brilliant and intimate knowledge of Father God shines through unobstructed IMO. If you don't mind the 'workbook' size, I believe you will enjoy this edition.

This book is profound. I make it a point to read a section every night.
I am blessed to have found this book. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a prolific inspiration of the renowned author C.S.Lewis, whose book The Screwtape Letters compelled many Christians to understand how the 'dark side' influences Christians to 'backslide' if you will. George MacDonald boldly leaves no stone unturned (in my humble opinion) in his writings. Although the time & the culture in which he lived was quite different, the man was obviously a genius; though I doubt he cared one bit about IQ. The sheer magnitude of George MacDonald's heartfelt love for everyman including you, - yes you my dear reader can render one virtually speaking, that is, as 'being baptised by John the Baptist'. If you patiently read this book and go back to it whenever the Spirit moves you, in my humble opinion, you will experience a 'quantum refresh' of your overall theological understanding.

Meaty/thought-provoking
I am enjoying the sermons so far. I am taking them slowly, about three morning devotionals per sermon, because there is much to chew on. The printing/binding is nice - think 8.5x11 workbook w/ slick cover about .75" thick.

Wonderful translation, from George Macdonald’s original Scots.
This is a wonderful translation. Easy to read and understand. A big book in size. This would no way for in a handbag! It’s huge!. With wide margins to write in. George wrote in heavy Scottish. This is plain English. My one, major quibble is not with the book, but with Amazon. And I have said it before. Amazon are paying people to translate the books. But then not having the decency to give a name or honour to the persons translating! This is disgraceful. Shame of them for that. I really wanted to know whose hard word translated this amazing book. But no name whatsoever. Just Amazon! Come on guys! You have made enough profit. NAME your Translators! Whoever did this; Thankyou for making it so easy for me, and bringing deep treasures into the light. I could not have understood it as well, without you.

Sermons for the soul
These ‘sermons’ are outpourings of the heart of a man fascinated and enthralled with his discovery of life with God, in a way that makes academic research seem like the effort to swim a river rather than float across it trustingly.

Into the dark forbidding wound
I am finding these sermons a real help, written by a man who has peered as deeply as he can into the Word of God who is Christ. His vision is as compassionate as it is probing. No matter is too thorny. He will, to use metaphor - something MacDonald does well, reach into the dark forbidding wound in the side of Christ, finding love even in Hell, strictness in the middle of mercy. I am reminded of Bonhoeffer's dismissal of 'cheap grace.' Above all MacDonald is, as with his fiction, a very comforting presence, who helps us to believe in God's goodness and reality despite the signs that apparently negate such trust.
