Absolutely adored it
Still not quite over this book a few weeks later. I fell in love with the characters - the story was beautifully, respectfully told. The depth that you get to know the characters is really something else. I feel like the author could drop them in any situation now and I would know exactly how they would feel about it.It’s an education this book. I wish I could forget it and read it all over again.

Exceptional writing
But for me the thread was lost when Solo moved to New York .The Trinidad section was more absorbing .Sometimes a blended family works better than a natural one , never more so than in the case of Betty , Solo and Mr Chetan. Harmony reigned until that overheard conversation led to the breakup of the trio, but still Mr Chetan is able to act as a conduit between mother and son , as Solo has the utmost respect for him and his advice .However , it can take an impartial outsider to remedy the rift , together with the unhappy death of Solo's staunchest ally .

A good weekend read
Heartbreaking, Horrifying, Wonderful. The memories of my time in Trinidad all flooded back with the language throughout this book. I read somewhere that this book made some people ‘ugly cry’- I am now one of those people. I laughed, I cried, I loved.

Highly recommended. Transports the reader.
A great read, but I dont think I'd call it 'electrifying'. I loved the way the writer conveyed the sense of life in the Carribbean, the culture etc, and especially the dialects, it was like being there. It was a very moving book. Recommended. One of this years Hay Festival Selections.

Too good to put down!
This is the first book I read from cover to cover in one go! So many mixed emotions as you are easily immersed in the characters of three very distinct personalities. There is everything in this book and more. Brought back so many good memories of classic Trinidadian phrases and also the disadvantages that sometimes come with small societies. Read this if you are brave enough to experience love, anger, lust, sadness, joy, surprise and anticipation all mixed together!
