like The Setting Sun or Almost Human and you will ...
You really have to know Dazai. Read some of his other books, like The Setting Sun or Almost Human and you will get a very good idea of his style. He is not for everyone.

The lighter side of Dazai
Well, this is not what I expected from the author of 'No Longer Human'. Most of the stories here are Dazai's versions of old fairy tales and the like. The first and last feature the kind of quirky family you might expect to find in a Wes Anderson film. The children amuse themselves by composing chain stories, and each child's chapter reflects their own individual character. The family are quite endearing, while the first story is the stronger of the two as the last one ends up being largely a retelling of the Rapunzel story. My least favourite story here was actually 'Blue Bamboo' itself, which I thought contained too much tiresome moralising. However, I thoroughly enjoyed all the other stories, including 'At Heidelberg', an autobiographical piece which is the odd one out in the collection. 'Taro the Wizard' (the first part of 'Romanesque') has quite the funniest twist. The translation reads extremely well throughout and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something light and fun which is also unusual and well-written.
