So many issues...
This series disappointed me. The art is gorgeous, and there is a ton of action. The story is interesting, as well. So, why one star? This series really does not seem to like women. I know this sounds extreme to say, but here me out. First, there are no real female characters to speak of outside of the demons. When one is introduced she is quickly sidelined in a very nasty way within two or three pages of her introduction. Oh, and the gateway for all demons? The wombs of women. So, Jack the Ripper runs around killing women who let demons infest their uteruses. That issue aside, Hell Blade features some other pretty big issues. The action scenes, which comprise most of this book, lack a solid flow, and the actual action can be difficult to follow. Story also feels severely compressed, as any details or potential character growth are glazed over in favor of a rapid fire pace. This leaves the whole mythology and back story of the characters and their connections under developed. In a supernatural series of this type, those are two very important details.Over all, my personal issues with the handling of women in the story aside, this series lacks a solid structure and narrative. While the art is very attractive, and violence plentiful, it lacks a solid lay out and direction to help give the reader a sense of movement . So, after the second volume of Jack the Ripper: Hell Blade, I have stopped reading the series, and I really can't recommend this one for anyone else.
