Better safe than sorry.
I live in a subdivision that was originally farm land and eventually sold to a developer who sold plots of land of at least one acre, while my.property is larger.Evidently and unbeknownst to the city who eventually bought the water rights, the developer installed the cheapest (!) underground water pipe which I would equate to schedule 20 PVC pipe equivalent instead of a heavier, more robust, PVC pipes. As a consequence, ever since I've lived in my house, 26+ years, we could nearly set our watches to coincide with a busted water supply line each summer, sometimes as often as 3-4 times each summer.Sadly, the city felt it was less economically feasible to replace the offending pipes than it was to simply (?) repair the damage as it occurred. This was cause for MUCH (!) aggravation and angst on my part, especially when I (used to) have five people along with pets and horses on my property.Even after the kids grew up, moved away, the horses (6) were sold, the pool disassembled and a divorce, I was alone with only my dog, myself and evaporative cooling to worry about. But when the water stopped flowing due to yet ANOTHER line break, I could be hours, if not several DAYS without running water. As a minimum it was an inconvenience but I could still shower using a propane fueled shower and I could flush the toilet by pouring water into the toilet to flush it after using the toilet.IF the water was thought to be off for more than 8 hours, the City would bring in cases of 1-gallon water jugs so residents would at least have enough to drink and cook with, but not take a proper bath/shower before work. While not being fun, I survived and thankfully, I would ALWAYS fill 4-6 five-gallon water jugs I have for camping, but still it was a PITA.This past fall the City FINALLY undertook the job to replace the faulty pipes with QUALITY tubes to, hopefully, eliminate the problem. But before they did I purchased two 55-gallon food grade drums which I fill at the start of summer and cycle every 6 months or so. (No, I don't waste the water but, instead, use it to water a number of trees and plants before exchanging it for fresh water.Still, in this day and age it is a good idea to keep in hand sufficient water for those unplanned emergencies which is why I also purchased one of these tub reservoirs for a little added security and peace of mind. With only o e bathroom/tub in my home, when or IF times become uncertain and I feel the need to actually use this water reservoir, I'll be unable to actually use the shower in an emergency, but as mentioned above, I have a portable hot water heater/shower device made by Zodi (single burner version) AND a camping shower enclosure in which I can take a complete and proper shower, but as I said, having to erect the enclosure AND prepare the water heater/shower gear (with pump) can be an inconvenience and requires about 1/2 to 1 hour to set up, but at least I can bathe properly. All that brings me around full circle to ensure that I have enough water between all of my large barrels, the camping jugs and now the tub reservoir. All in all I can have just about 215 gallons of safe, potable drinking water should the need ever occur and there is a LONG term water outrage. Figuring 4 gallons for each shower (the shower reservoir hold 4 gallons) plus two additional gallons for drinking, cooking and flushing the toilet, and estimating 6 gallons per day for my dog and I, this quantity gives me a total of 43 DAYS of water supply before it is all expended. Hopefully, whatever crisis caused the water to be shut down will have been resolved, but if word gets out that the shortage will be longer, I will make it stretch out by not showering as often, pushing a complete bath cycle to every other day or perhaps three days to extend my supply. In closing, I HIGHLY recommend you or anyone concerned about the possibility of a future water shortage to consider buying at LEAST one or more of these kits to have in hand if word gets out that there might be an interruption of your water supply. And if you live in an apartment or multi person dwelling or living on a floor above the ground floor, get one or more of these bags so you don't have to hike down any number of flights if stairs just to go get water from some source other than your faucet.Oh, HELL YES, I recommend this water storage container!
