Great first shirt pattern
I just started to learn how to sew and I wanted to make a shirt. This pattern is great for beginners because it DOES NOT have a yolk in the back. The back is one piece making it easier for new sewers like myself. I made three shirts for myself and the latest was fabric featuring the Disney character Stitch, which I wore on a trip to Disney World this past Summer and actually got complimented on while in the parks. The pattern is very comfortable and sized properly - I cut mine using the large pattern and it fits my 42" chest great. The hem does run long (to my finger tips) but I trim it so the hem aligns with my wrists. If you are new to sewing or just want an easy pattern to make a Hawaiian style shirt, then this McCalls pattern is for you. FYI - the instructions aren't always that clear particularly regarding collar attachment - but there are numerous tutorials online that helped me out tremendously.

Torn between giving this 3 or 4 stars
I am a beginner sewer. Up to this point, I have only made duffel bags (I can sew pockets with hardware now) and pillowcases. I was able to finish this project and I think it looks really good. I have 2 reasons for giving this 3 stars:1) The instructions were pretty unclear, I ended up cutting the patterns and watching a YouTube video (...) for instructions. The steps are different in the video, but I think it works out much better. The paper instructions are simply way too confusing if you are like me and have never sewn a shirt with buttons/ collars before, I was able to complete the shirt with no troubles after watching the video a couple of times.2) The sizes are also really unclear. It doesn't look like a regular pattern when you unfold the pattern paper- it's confusing to figure out the lines and the sizes, unlike regular patterns that I am used to. I made an XXL for a bodybuilder friend, and the finished product actually looks really nice. The XXL is really, really big...it's more like a 3XL, which is my friend's shirt size. I wanted to make XXL with this pattern all along so it worked out for me, but good luck if you want to make your shirt in a size other than their XXL!

Returning to sewing...directions lacking
Measured my husband and ordered the appropriate size. Received the pattern and measured it against existing shirt of his. It was enormous. I worked to tailor the pattern and made a shirt. Still too large and oversized. I bought another of this same pattern in an XL and will try it. I followed the directions on the button holes & made via the pattern. They SHOULD RUN north/south not east/west as the pattern indicated. Hubby dislikes as a result. The styling is fine for a "casual" shirt just order it in a smaller size.

Shabby
This is not one of McCalls best patterns, the ink pattern lines on mine were smeared and almost invisible in several place, and there is only one size in the envelope. I kept looking at it and thinking "surely someone has started knocking-off sewing patterns, this couldn't be a McCall's".I understand the logic for charging less for just one pattern size, but the sloppy printing job is nasty.

Very large collar
Beware the collar sizing! Bought one of these after measuring the husband and matching up his chest, waist and hip sizes as per the back of the packet. Made a toile and discovered that there is 8cm of ease added both front and back, so it looks like a painter’s smock when worn; and the collar is humongous. As the collar is pretty much the only part of a shirt you can’t take in, that’s a problem - it’s back to self-drafting patterns from scratch for me!
