Kwikset92580-005 258 Downtown Low Profile Slim Square Modern Contemporary Single Cylinder Deadbolt Door Lock featuring SmartKey Security in Satin Nickel

I've been in the remodeling and renovation sector of the construction industry for years, but have always used contractor-grade locksets almost the entire time. Generally higher prices sets dont offer much beyond added weight, while lacking in fitment and tolerances. Kwiksets newer deadbolts, locksets, and handsets are anything but sloppy.I was very impressed with the deadbolt mechanism of the Downtown low-profile deadbolt. The deadbolt itself has a very thick and sturdy bottle with a slight taper so that you dont have to hold the door to get a tight seal; it just sort of wedges itself into the double thickness jamb locking plate that comes with 3" architectural screws (you want to remove the casing to shim behind it so that your jamb doesn't get sucked into the rough opening). on top of the actual manner in which the deadbolt locks, there is the very smooth and friction free locking lever that doesn't bind at all or carry any slo in its tolerances. Turning the lock is a very soft actuation with a satisfying clunk at the end as the bolt completely engages.Theres also the keying itself. Most of Kwikset's (as well as Baldwin and Weiser) newer lock come with the "SmartKey" feature that allows you feature that makes rekeying a breeze. This offers a significant cost savings over having a locksmith key all of your locks the same, or rekey units for rental properties after move-outs. The process takes all of two minutes and is relatively foolproof. If you mess up the rekeying procedure, its just a matter of finding where the lock memorized the key and starting over from there (you can find links to youtube videos about what to do if you mess up), which makes it even more appealing to people less mechanically inclined.I purchased these deadbolts in "iron black" (matte/satin black) and the finish is flawless and ives a very modern and refined look.I will most certainly be using Kwikset's locks on further projects.

After I bought this set, I noticed it was a favorite on home renovation shows and I imagine that's with good reason aside from the aesthetic of it. It does look nice and it's unique but it also works very well. I've used some deadbolts in the past that don't give you a solid click when it's locked where you can feel that the bolt it sell set into the recessed frame but this one does. Easy enough to unlock and gives you some confidence when you feel that bolt set properly in its place.I can't speak to using the Kwikset multi-key function where you can key this to some of their other locksets but I read through the instructions and it seemed like a pretty simple process. Just know that it can only be keyed to select other Kwikset locks/knobs and not to any other brands.

I'm annoyed with this because it's so pretty but it is designed without having normal hole structure in mind. So as you can see the hole section where the bolt comes out is low on the circle but that doesn't match any standard door so you'd have to cut inside the door to make a lower hole for that. Was that really necessary? EDITED TO ADD: this was my old review ^^ - I have since discovered humbly that after reading the instructions a few times it works differently from other knobs and is installed a tad differently. Therefore my original review is user error on my part. It's actually a really nice knob.

These are nice looking and they enhance the look of my patio doors. Being able to rekey them to the same key as all my other house door locks is a big plus. It is quite easy to do; just follow the directions religiously. The innards look a bit cheap, so I am a bit worried about longevity. They replaced a 30 year old Kwikset deadbolt that was still functional, but became really weathered looking. The old deadbolt was much sturdier.

I have installed plenty of knobsets and deadbolts, and with deadbolts they always seem to be within about 10% of being exactly alike.This unit was a fresh experience.Mostly what I am most pleased by is how low profile it is. Deadbolts usually have that 1" bulge on either side of the door. This unit manages the same task in half the profile, and I can't see that strength is sacrificed. I suppose the square shape makes it easier for a 'bad guy' to put a tool on it and torque the lock into failure--but those guys are getting in regardless of what hardware you chose.The lock looks smart in its location. Paying twice what I might otherwise have spent is offset.Only ding is that the shape and key location makes it hard to find the key hole in dim or dark situations. There aren't the usual symmetries and landmarks to go by. But I am converting to a motion sensor exterior light which will make that problem go away.And as for SmartKey, anyone who buys a deadbolt or entry knobset that isn't SmartKey is missing out on near-term and long-term benefits/advantages. I have had only one problem with a SmartKey lock not setting right to a new pattern, and that was most likely human error. And that is one call to a locksmith in over 50 times of "rekeying" Kwikset locks--that is money in the bank.

This lock looks super nice and works great. Only thing I can find wrong with it (and it’s really not that big of a deal) is that the latch feels a little flimsy, but it’s not alarmingly flimsy and certainly does not make me think less of this lock. Although this product is designed to lock doors shut, it quickly unlocked the door to my heart.

Looks great - modern - once I followed the instructions I had the old lock out and this one in in about 10 minutes. Keying was really easy.

Nice deadbolt with the easy resetting of keys. Had purchased this to use with the August smartlock, but unfortunately it wasn't compatible (even though the August rep said it was). I was disappointed that we had to use a different deadbolt, as this gave a very modern feel to our contemporary wood door. Highly recommend as it's low-profile and really nice. Just know that it doesn't work with the August smartlock!

Es una buena chapa, cumplió justo la función que quería, fue un poco más complicado de lo esperado instalarla, debido a que la agujero requerido por esta chapa en la puerta era un poco mayor al existente de mi chapa anterior. So far good! Quería comprar una cerradura cuadrada, bonito y que sea fácil/suave abrir desde adentro del hogar y que sea seguro! Pues hasta ahorita cumple todo!

This is probably one of the smoothest operating deadbolts I've ever used. I bought this mostly for the colour (I had recently put in a keypad entry handle that was black) and the low profile design but I am thrilled with how well it works operationally. I did find when I removed the old deadbolt from the door that the existing hole in the door was only 1-5/8" in diameter and to install this lock you NEED a 2-1/8" hole. Not the fault of the product in any way but it is something to be aware of when buying deadbolts. The installation instructions were clear and straightforward and I am very happy with this purchase.
