Very nice, especially on the transom
I have a new multi-species boat and didn't want to drill in the transom to get rod holders for trolling out the back. These worked PERFECTLY. I use them with the rocket launchers and it frees up a lot of space on the back platform. Measure your transom width first though. My platform in the back is only about 3" down from the top of the transom. The standard Scotty rod holder may or may not work because they allow the handle to protrude lower than the bracket. With the rocket launchers they allow the rod to be entirely above the transom. These things are STURDY, so no worries about them coming loose. Also, they don't scratch like a cheaper one may. Scotty doesn't just throw products out into the market, they seem to engineer their stuff pretty reliably.

Rock Solid
I’m an avid buyer of everything! I love it when i finally come across a great product to write a review about.Still though, i do have to read through all the reviews and sift through the pluses and minus about a product. Very happy to say as soon as i picked this up you can instantly feel the heavy duty quality. Im very confidant in my purchase that it will last. I did a bunch of research to learn about the brand and i know going forward i can easily configure what may be needed later on.

STRONG and SECURE
This thing clearly does what it advertises, and it does it well. I use it with the Scotty anchor mount on a 15 lb river anchor with plastic marine rope and it holds it flawlessly in place even on the windiest of days. The clamp is very secure, easy to screw on and never comes loose. As other reviewers state, the thing is super thick snd sturdy, so I'd be willing to bet it can handle any job with ease.

Well built but didn't fit the angle of my gunwale very well
When I first took this clamp-on rod holder out of the box, I was impressed with the heft of the molding and the fact that they use stainless steel hardware to attach the rod holder base. When I tried to attach it to the gunwale of our Gregor 13' aluminum boat (at the middle seat position), it didn't fit particularly well. The angle of the gunwale, even at the middle of the boat, was too severe to allow the unit to clamp on properly. The rubber pad and its metal base on the screw clamp don't pivot, so it can't adjust to any angle other than almost square. As a result, when I tried to tighten it, the rubber pad popped off the metal pad base it clips to because it was only touching on the very edge. I was able to tighten the clamp, but wasn't happy with the fit. I did find, however, that if I turned it around and put the clamping screw on the outside, it snugged up just fine. The rod base sits well out of level, because of the angle of the boat side, but with the adjustability of the rod holder, it shouldn't be too much of a problem, it just looks a little funny. If you have a boat with fairly straight sides at the gunwale, this should be fine. If you have any significant flair to your sides, you might want to look elsewhere. I would be great if they would offer this clamp in a second model better adapted for the flared sides on many aluminum boats (or make it angle adjustable).

Bulletproof
Initially I purchased several Scotty rod holders and accessories for my Old Town Predator kayak, which is an older model that has holes built into the center console to hold these attachments. Recently I've taken more solo fishing trips in my Old Town Camper canoe and wanted to utilize a rod holder to either troll or use multiple rods. However, I did not want to drill into this boat; this attachment is the perfect solution. Now, I will state that it is somewhat large. However, when attaching a $400 spinning rod combo or a $750 fly rod outfit, I want a device that is durable and I know is going to hold. The Scotty 449 checks this box, particularly with a groove that securely locks the clamp over the gunwale of my canoe. The one downside of this clamp is that it is fixed in a singular position. It would be nice to be able to perform micro-adjustments with the clamp so that you're quickly fishing after dropping in the rod holder. However, this does lead to improved security and adjustments to rod positioning can be made through the rod holders. Also worth noting is that Scotty representatives were very responsive to my inquiries regarding the functionality of this unit. I had a couple of conversations with two representatives as I am also looking for a clamp that I can affix to my thwart for one of their drink holders. John and Gary were very accommodating, even sending me graphics to scale of several clamps for my review since no dealers in my area carried the items. It was clear the organization values their customers given the amount of time we spent discussing clamps that retail for $30. Kudos to them. (side note: the opening of the 449 clamp is too large for my thwart to securely hold a beverage on the water).Though I've not yet used on the water, I've tested it to my complete satisfaction - this clamp will not come off the gunwale until I decide to remove it - so I have no hesitation recommending this product.

Game Changer
With the fly rod holder it turned my canoe into a trout fishing machine. These are bomb proff and just work.

did not fit my canoe gunnel
It's very hefty, but it doesn't fit the gunnel of my canoe (esquif huron). It has a weird angle, that fits loose on my canoe. I used an oscillating saw, and removed some plastic, and it was better, but not great. I threw it in the garbage can. I went back to my old way of attaching the rod holder: C clamp and piece of 2X4 with rod holder screwed to 2x4. The Scotty rod holder is basically a C clamp -- I like the idea and material, it just didn't fit my canoe.

very well built, bit big though
well constructed, can tell it's going to last a lifetime.my only criticism is the size of it, its a considerably bigger than I was expecting and suspect they could definitely do something to reduce the form factor

Not great
Scotty usually turn out quality gear, but not here. The width of the clamp is poor and you would struggle to get this to fit on most hire boats; it should have been wider, say 2.5 or even 3 inches. The mount also sits at a funny angle on the clamp, which is rather odd. The whole thing feels cheap and nasty. Thankfully Amazon returns is really good, so I shipped it back for a speedy refund. I've now got some custom aluminium clamps for Scotty mounts with 3 inch widths, which are ten times better than this effort.
