A Haunting and Hopeful Story of Love--All Kinds of Love
This is such a great, rewarding read. Told in two interwoven narratives, one in the present and one in 1955, the story weaves a tale of heartbreak and the redemptive power of family. In the past,18-year-old June is about to marry a man she barely knows in a small Ohio town that becomes the fallback shooting location for a movie starring the handsome, Cary Grant-esque Jack Montgomery. Through the machinations of June's friend Lindie, a young tomboy whose unrequited love for June finds its outlet in trying to save her friend from a stolid marriage, June and Jack share a brief, doomed passion. Sixty years later, June's granddaughter Cassie inherits the decaying, sentient mansion where June once lived -- and, to her surprise, the entire fortune of Jack Montgomery, whose will claims her father as his previously unacknowledged son with June. Soon Jack's daughter Tate, a famous actress in her own right, shows up with her entourage to demand a DNA test. Complications ensue, and Cassie winds up trapped in the house not only with Tate, her man Friday and her PA, but Tate's half-sister Edna, all of them working through complicated histories both familial and romantic. Both Cassie and June are rich, rootable characters, but it's the painfully closeted Lindie who will break your heart.

So much fun! I've never had a favorite contemporary without but ...
So much fun! I've never had a favorite contemporary without but after Bittersweet and now June I can say Beverly-Whittemore is definitely a favorite.I almost entirely read history, biography, memoir and mysteries. Her books do have mystery in them but not my normal Agatha Christie type mystery. No, the book isn't perfect and there were some moments I rolled my eyes, but it's a long book that reads so fast. It's such a great story. Highly recommend!

June is one of the best books I've read this year
The author really doesn't need my review - there are already many others. BUT, June is one of the best books I've read this year. Do walls talk? Are our dreams really spirits trying to teach us or warn us? Two Oaks is a lovely old house with a lot of history and even more secrets. In 1955 and 2015, we are given two stories, each of them riveting in its own right. Together, they weave a tale of suspense and love beyond the boundaries of time.June kept me riveted to my chair, focused only on what was happening at Two Oaks. I was mesmerized for the weekend. A summer treat.
