Golden Mean Calipers - Small 4.7" (12cm) - Measures From 9 mm-220 mm

These calipers are accurate from my checking to within a few tenths of a millimeter, are lightweight, and are well made.  But these calipers aren't the kind you use to transfer a measurement so you can drill a hole to the right diameter or cut some wood to the right length.These are calipers to own to prove you are awake and enlightened to the ubiquity of the golden ratio all around us, in nature, science, art, math, and the eyebrows of everyone on CNN.  It's like a secret decoder tool to discover everywhere Phi and phi appear, ratios historically considered forbidden secret known only to a privileged few.  It deserves to be stored in a special and ornate container, one which hints at the almost magical nature of what is held within.  And regarding that....Booo!  Mine didn't come with the deluxe wood box either, just a translucent white plastic box with "golden mean calipers" stamped across it.  The metal isn't brushed as shown in the photos either.  My Precious should look like the pictures.UPDATE 7/18/2017: I sent an email to Golden Mean Calipers inquiring about this. I received a courteous response from Nick. He makes these in New Zealand. SupplyKick is an authorized U.S. reseller of his calipers, so it is the same product. SupplyKick only provides them in the plastic case (as pictured in my review). Nick offers a variety of other cases when purchased from him direct including hardwood and acrylic and options for custom laser-etched enscriptions.

I definitely would purchase this item again & recommend it to anyone looking for Golden Mean Calipers. I purchased 4 other Golden Mean Calipers from other companies and this by far was the best one. I kept searching because I was disappointed & unsatisfied with the other items I found on amazon. I am happy I kept looking because I loved this product. To top it off the customer service I received from Nick was amazing! He went above and beyond to make sure my needs were met and answered all of my questions without hesitation.

I tend to get caught up in the exuberance of reviews. Ah, a golden-means caliper! Since I use the Alvin proportional divider as well as other dividers and compasses, I thought, "why not?" Thing is, I don't have much use for it now that I have it. It's made well enough, though I'd say the Alvin is better--and I can set the Alvin to the same ratio, which just necessitates a flick of the wrist to measure. The case is made from some type of compressed wood fiber, kind of artsy, but not high end. If you can afford $35 for the thing, then why not.

First of all, right when I recieved the package in the mail and caught sight of the case I was enchanted. The case (or the one I recieved) is made of a strong dark wood, is magnetically sealed and has a phi spiral carved over it. As for the Calipers themselves, gosh, what elegant and simple beauty! You really can tell that whomever built these things, that they truly care about their craft and wish to pass on their gift to the world. I'm impressed and inspired and play with these all the time. I like to keep them handy when working with art and taking with me on hikes to measure oak tree branches, flowers and such.

These cute small calipers were a Christmas present for both my artist mother and my instrument building boyfriend. They came on time for the holiday even though I only ordered them a month before knowing that they were handmade and shipping from New Zealand. I was fully prepared to give them as an after holiday bonus present but was thrilled to get them in time. They are just beautiful and the packaging is gorgeous too! Both recipients are sacred geometry enthusiasts and absolutely LOVED them.

I grew up playing with my grandfather's drafting tools, which were the best you could get (he was the civil engineer for Kennedy Airport). So, I've come to appreciate good tools. A lot of thought has gone into this caliper. I like the magnetic closures for the case - just slide up. I'm using it to design watch faces, using only a compass, ruler, and these calipers.

Did not come in the wooden box, instead it was in a plastic case. Other than that, they do the functional job they are supposed to do. Hope this helps those who think they might get what is pictured above.

Let's face it--the first thing your will do when you unwrap these bad-boys is examine the proportions of your own face. This is normal, and it's exactly what I did. While I was sorely disappointed with the results, I could not possibly be happier with the product. These calipers are a must-have for art lovers, aestheticians, architects, and shallow sons-of-guns like myself. Just remember, you are perfect the way God made you.
