but the songs have been wonderful! I primarily use the workbook as a guide ...
I am using SSL book 1 with my first grader. At this level we aren't using the workbook very much, but the songs have been wonderful! I primarily use the workbook as a guide to help me reinforce the words and the lyrics listed in the book have been a great help for me to learn the songs. Other reviews had mentioned that the teacher book had not been necessary, and I have found that to be true. We do, however, use the DVD (sold separately) to introduce the new words each week. She has loved the characters on it and I have found the section on derivitaves to be very useful.Has it had an impact on our studies? Absolutely! For example after learning that discipuli means student in Latin we had been studying our history terms. My daughter had been having difficulty remembering what (and who) disciples were. Then we talked about word derivitives and that disciple is a derivitive of discipuli (which means student). She then made the connection that disciples were students of Jesus. We have had this occur quite often. And not only is it helping my 1st grader, but my 9th grader who is studying Spanish as well. She can't help but hear the Latin songs that we song, and she has found that many of the words she has picked up as a result of our repetitive singing helped her in her Spanish studies. For example "tibi gratias ago" means thank you in Latin and the Spanish derivitave for thank you, "gracias," is very similar. This is one of the reasons we chose Latin to study. This was definately worth the investment!

Who knew my kids would ENJOY learning Latin?!
We ordered this as part of our school's curriculum, but it's been such a success in our home! Our kids go around singing the songs, and love to watch multiple chapters on the DVD at a time. They have truly enjoyed learning LATIN from this program!

Missing CD
Ordered two of these and both were missing the song CDs that are supposed to be included. The front cover even says the CDs are included in the back, but they were not there.

A Great Latin Beginning
Perfect for my 3 and 5 year olds as they begin to learn Latin. For the reviewer that complained that these were random words, theyโre not. Itโs foundational vocabulary that you would learn embarking upon any language like greetings, around the house, school, family, etc. No, there is no explicit grammar in this book, but I canโt imagine kids this young sitting down and memorizing declensions anyway. They love singing the songs, and Iโm happy that this will give them some confidence as we move onto a more traditional approach when theyโre a little older.

Excellent language program!
I haven't tried any other foreign langue programs for kids, but my kids love this program. I bought it for my 8 year old and she can do it by herself. My younger kids enjoy the songs and are learning words too. I'm really glad I chose Latin because so many words have Latin roots. My daughter is constantly coming across new words and making the connection to the Latin origin. We have now moved into the second book in the series. I highly recommend this for younger students! Before we purchased it, we looked up some videos on YouTube of kids singing along or quizzing young kids. Take a look if you are considering this program.

Great music
The songs/music are great and make it so easy for my 5 year old to learn the words! I would recommend this for a child between 5 and 10. If you have a prereader, you will have to do more 1 on 1 work, helping them through the worksheets. I think I may have found one error on the CD - in one of the songs I am pretty sure the singers got mixed up and used classical pronunciation when they were supposed to be using ecclesiastical. Overall minor detail, and I don't think my daughter has even noticed - I just make sure that when we are singing along, we get it right on our end :)

Would be better with vocabulary pronounced on CD.
This is fun and a decent learning tool for very young children. The primary shortcoming is that the new vocabulary in each lesson in only sung--never pronounced in isolation with a speaking voice. Usually one can decipher how to pronounce the word from how it is sung, but frequently the song adds an extra syllable to the pronunciation to make it match the beat, or the new word appears at an extreme high or low note and it is really difficult to hear the pronunciation--which is irritating and defeats the purpose. I use this mainly for fun, but the book for making easy yet serious strides (if child is ready) is Getting Started with Latin, by William Lenney.

WONDERFUL!!
My kids love this book and I love this book! This is a great introduction to Latin. I'm using it right now with 6 of my kids. The youngest is 5 and the oldest 14. It is geared more for the younger ages, but the older ones are learning as well. Each chapter introduces approximately 5 new words and then uses them in a catchy song. I appreciate the fact that the music is appropriate--familiar tunes/children's songs/etc. So far, we haven't run into anything objectionable and we're almost done with the book. I would definitely recommend this book to those who are deciding whether or not to teach Latin to their children. It's not too deep, yet it does a bit of grammar. I love it!!!

Brilliant
Song School Latin is brilliant and engaging. The songs are fun and it is a great way to inspire kids to learn latin. You don't need the teacher's manual and there are colouring pages online to tie in with the book and add another dimension. I think this is the best language programs for younger kids I have come across. The balance of song and activity is perfect, just enough to re-enforce the vocab without getting dull.
