The Sandman

Superb rendition; go for it if you enjoy fantasy...
The Sandman is of course one of those 'legendary' works - the graphic novel (read: comic book) equivalent of the Mahabharata or the Illiad and Gaiman is like Shakespeare. It's almost impossible to not like it and be considered as 'well read' or a 'worldly wise' person. Therefore I'm very unsure of how to rate this and almost a little apprehensive. Because see - fantasy is decidedly NOT my genre. I know that. I also feel I'm not well-suited for graphic novels because I'm a bit impatient with wanting my narrative to keep flowing and therefore I often give only cursory looks at the artwork (however beautiful and detailed) and miss out on the clues which lie there.I only picked up The Sandman because I wanted to chance something out of my usual fare and hey if it was so great and critically acclaimed, maybe I'd develop an interest I never know I had. Anyhoo...so instead of going for the insanely expensive graphic novel I picked up the authentic Gaiman certified audio-book.So reviewing this on two parameters:1) Does it do what it set out to?Ans) Yes i suppose so! It's wonderfully produced (if a bit loud), it's a dramatisation and not your typical audio book which a single narrator reads. I felt a number of times that this was probably better for me than reading the graphic novels. It's richly textured, gives a lot of background and I found the narration great. The internet also says it is very faithful to the original, so if you want to get into this world - this is probably a good place to start.Where I had some difficulty was in connecting the events to the bigger picture (when you 'read' it, you just google) but here some of the enunciations aren't indicative and without the imagery to support you don't connect those links. This is probably more an issue for people who haven't grown up with a background in classical literature and Western mythology and legends - I assume for his core audience in the occident those references are clearer. For e.g. I've not read A Midsummer's Nights Dream, hadn't really heard of John Constantine or the rest of the DC Universe beyond the ones referenced in mainstream movies or am not overly familiar with Greek mythology. These barriers are emphasized in an audio form - though never to the extent that you can't follow the gist of what's happening.2) Did I enjoy it? Would I read/listen to the next parts?Ans) I did not hate it, but I also did not particularly enjoy it to go wow. As I've already said - I know that this isn't my genre and nothing here made me change my decision. It is an incredibly complex world that's been created, and the stories are certainly nuanced and decidedly 'literary' - so I'm sure for fans of the genre it is wonderfully enthralling - I can appreciate that this isn't your everyday comic.Personally though I kept getting thrown off by the randomness of the arc, the disjoint stories and the myriad characters that you're expected to keep track off. I enjoyed the first arc the best where Dream is captured and interacts with human characters - but the ones with completely fantasy didn't captivate me at all.In a nutshell : glad to have experienced (consumed?) this - happy for the experience and the pop-culture cred that I can now use for the rest of my life. I don't think I'm coming back - but if you're a fan of the genre who's never been able to read/afford the original works - definitely try the audio version

Genius writing combined with some of the best voice acting cast. LOVED IT!
This audiobook is my first audiobook and quite literally it's a brilliant work of art. I never knew I would like an audiobook so much. Niel Gaiman's writing and narration bring this book to life and the voice acting of the cast brings all characters to life. I recommend it to everyone who wants to step into a fictional world with a great story.

Excellent
Having read the entirety of the 'The Sandman' graphic novel series and absolutely revering it, I was extremely sceptical about an audio adaptation. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The production and cast are super. The richness of the art and graphics are translated into a balanced, effortless description. James McAvoy as Dream is so close to what one would imagine Morpheus to sound like and the cherry on the top is getting to listen to Neil himself as the narrator.Unlike other audiobooks, you want to take your time with this one and give it all your attention, because it's worth it.

Doesn’t work
This will not open in my MacBook Pro. It won’t open on an external CD/DVD device. This was a waste of money.
