What is the recommended hand pump for this?

Really any high pressure should work. I use a compressor and it literally takes 15 seconds to fill.

If it was that's pretty cheap. I paid a lot more for it. But it was worth it.

The bolt doesn't retract enough to load the magazine. What am I missing?

Its bolt action. After each shot you have cock the lever back. The magazine will rotate placing the next round and you push the lever back in, inserting the next round. This is an air pistol. Not sure what you expecting. A semi auto air pistol. It is a very powerful air pistol. You can either shoot one shot at a time or use the magazine that with rotate 12 rounds instead of loading one by one which is very convenient. As simple as pulling the bolt action back and pushing it back in.
