A beautiful story about love, vulnerability, and life!
It’s a beautiful story about black love, culture, family and life. The story explains the challenges that these two young lovers face in life and how they deal with it internally and externally. While this book addresses social issues it also addresses and captures what it means to love. The author captures through the characters in this story the vulnerability that’s required to be honest, open, mindful and expressive to make things work in life. I believe what’s truly important is that this idea is relatable amongst everyone in society, whatever the dynamics are in our lives, whether it’s a significant other, friend or family member.

love story
Beautiful celebration of black love and black art. The entire book feels like reading a poem. I feel like if I reread this book 100 times I would learn something new each time.

Beautiful
Caleb captured entire worlds in so few words, I was astounded. This is a book I can see myself returning to again and again. He gave a unique voice to a pain that too many of us know all too well, and I thank the author for that.

Damaged
I was a little disappointed that the book arrived damaged. I ordered this book because it was our current read for my book club last month. It’s normally not a book I would have picked up on my own. I wasn’t disappointed though. It was written beautifully and poetically.

Excellent storytelling, especially for a first novel.
This short novel, written by a gifted young black artist, is a timely contribution to our much needed understanding of the evils of prejudice. The style is unusual, written in the second person, giving the story a poetic quality. It is a love story of a young, black couple coping in a society (in London, England) that is mostly white. This modern theme might deter some readers here in the USA as a "critical race theory." But as the author of a novel on the same theme, Rose of the Flats, I highly recommend this book.

Poetic Writing
This was beautifully written! It was done with poetic writing. The author does an amazing job in telling the story, making the reader feel like he is there with the characters on this journey. I will say this, although this novel was written so brilliantly, it was a tad too brilliant. I did not really get a deep understanding of the characters in this book. I am not sure if this was intentionally done, or if it has something to do with my reading experience.I definitely wanted to know more about the characters, I wanted a little more to the story as a whole. Not bad by any means, but if he writes another book, I might pass on it.

Art Masterpiece
The title struck me as ambiguous but upon reading you realize it signifies the dangers and unpredictability of life and love. The story travels between two black British artists as they battle the waves of fear, possibilities, suffering, and intimacy. Nelson’s novel interweaves important societal and political issues and their deep rooted effects on the black man’s psych. The desire to be seen more than just a black body. The desire to be known. to be understood. The significance behind the cover, the portraits, the title, the musical representation, are all chosen with precision. Every detail is purposeful. Not only is this book enlightening but it illuminates black culture and its creatives. Definitely encourage everyone to read this beauty.

This was an emotional experience - more than a book
I felt claustrophobic reading these words and would notice I was holding my breath for him. Excruciatingly painful and stunningly beautiful at the same time. As a white women, I can’t possibly appreciate the sources of these emotions, but this book invites me to feel the pain and the desperation. I was achingly saddened and inspired by this story. What an incredible gift.
