Carpentry and Joinery Illustrated

Important Book
This is a reprint of an old book. There are a lot of books that should be reprinted on a regular basis. Just because a book was written long ago, does not mean it is obsolete. If you have any interest in carpentry or woodworking or architecture, this is a valuable book to have.A lot of people who call themselves carpenters will not know a lot of what this book teaches. There are some color plates that were not included in the book, due to high cost, but you are given a website where you can download the color plates and save them to a hard drive, or print them youself. There are diagrams on nearly every page.Wish we could get houses back to this level of craftsmanship.

Amazing resource !
I initially found this book on a YouTube video about exotic joinery techniques. The book was the original print. He mentioned had been reprinted. This book is amazing. Everything you would need to know about working with wood is in there. The illustrations are beautiful and very clear. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know about carpentry.

classic knowledge might solve modern problems
I saw a youtube video where they made a very strong square stock end joint from this book and thought some old school techniques are still the best solution to issues I still run into today. I learned from the book that many of the joints and carpentry methods I use are actually quite old and have stood the test of time for hundreds of years. This book is a good reference and quite interesting to read also. Sure we all have lots of modern power tools that make some of this obsolete but here or there this book will solve a problem for you.

Remarkable reference. A rare find, applicable, useful to practitioner, historian and theorist
As one trained in classical architecture finding carpenters/craftsman to reproduce details of doorways, cornices, dormers, vaulted ceilings, etc. using proper methods is nearly impossible due to the utter lack of training available since the advent of modernism and poo-pooing of all traditional attainment of the past. Universities no longer teach this tradition and the trades have lost the craft. This book is a blue print that describes how and why traditional building details were created with critical diagrams, cross sections and wood grain descriptions. An old timer carpenter who strictly does remodeling in pre-1900 pioneer buildings pointed this book out to me. The script is small because it packs a lot of information and I can forgive them for the minimally fuzzy but tolerable image resolution; the content is a gem from a nobler age yest very applicable both in technique, restoration and inspiration for the future age. A used original edition may have less fuzzier images, but this will suffice for study and reference.

Perfect condition. Illustrations are great!
Item arrived in perfect condition. Looks like it's brand new. The condition was excellent, as if brand new, even though it was listed "as used - like new." Illustrations are great and very clear. Very happy with purchase.

Old construction techniques
First of all, I’m a Project Manager for a larger construction firm and I am a hobbyist woodworker. I bought this book because I enjoy going back to hand tools to shape and finish wood for relaxation and enjoyment. However, I discovered this is a bit more, so now I’m doing a bit of timber framing and using more techniques from the book than I’d originally intended. What a fantastic resource.

Not a good print quality.
This is a reprint of a 1907 book (but that as stated in the description so ok) and so dated but good technique and tool descriptions. Especially useful for people building and making things old style. However the scanning of the original and reprint looks like a cheap illegal photocopy. Many pages are faded and all pages are undersized to the size of the book page. Makes it difficult to read. Also, it is written in the language of the day for someone who is in the later stages or competed an apprenticeship. So for a tradesman knowledgable in the terms 5/5. Average home woodworker 3/5. As a beginners book 1/5.

Great Book with Detailed drawings
I got the book to learn about the way joinery was done. The book shows detailed joinery for construction and fine work. Windows, doors and even frame construction. If you want to know how it is done today, Do not get this book. If you like building things with hand tools, then this may be just what you want.

Carpentry & Joinery Illustrated
I was looking for constructional details of doors and windows for restoration of a listed building of about 1870. Although this book is a reprint of a slightly later publication (1907)it is probably close enough and provides the level of construction detail that I require. There seem to be few sources of really detailed constructional information, and this is as good as I have found but it still misses out some necessary techniques such as the joints where glazing bars cross. The book contains comprehensive coverage of many aspects of construction, but surprisingly nothing on stairs, so I presume this was a completely separate trade. As many of my windows have arched tops I found this book, read in conjunction with Circular Work in Carpentry and Joinery, provided most of the information I need.If you are looking to reproduce constructional joinery of the early part of the 20th century this is the book.
