Unexpected richness
This was a gift for my daughter who is delighted. On looking through it, I decided that the term "matchstick men" is a very lazy one, even if it maybe helps as a marketing device. These people are far from matchstick: there is a depth of perception of moods, and sympathy for working class people. They appear at first to be rather isolated, but on closer looking there is a whole affectionate social commentary. You can see their inter-reactions or their avoidance of each other, they are so proccupied. The colours are gentle but rich. The profiles of a couple of spectators at the foot of p81 still make me laugh when I think of them. I am a little disgruntled that I gave it as a present and wonder whether to get a copy for myself.

Perfect gift
Bought this book for my partner and she absolutely loves it. She's a huge Lowry fan and says that the way it is written is a lot more insightful than others like it. It's a good, heavy, big book full of lots of info and art work! Worth every penny.

Very informative book
Unlike most picture books, this also includes detailed information about the artist himself. It was a present for my nephew who is very keen on Lowry's paintings, but had known very little about the artist until now, so he was very pleased with the gift!

If you want to understandL.S. Lowry and his work; read this.
A comprehensive account of a misunderstood artist (at least by the powers that be) by someone who knew him both socially and as an artist. This book pulls together all the facts and some of Lowry's work and delivers a powerful story about a lonely and sometimes isolated artist who succinctly captured the sorrow, humour and hardships of the people of the industrialised north like no one else has done either before or since. An outstanding book.
