half-assed AOR. A hookless, disappointing lame album.
Wow, do I ever AGREE with the other reviewer here. This LP just makes me queasy. It's simply half-assed AOR crap! When I was a kid, I had Fandango's second album called "Last Kiss" (1978). That record, while not great, is a decent, well produced and overall satisfying LP. And I;'d also like to say that Joe Lynn Turner is a very talented singer AND guitar player. he deserved better than this first Fandango album. Again, Last Kiss (1978) is a much better choice, as would be a couple of the records after that. Not that any of these are classics, but they're substantially better than this dreadful debut.So....after all these years, I made the terrible mistake of purchasing this first, self titled album (decent album cover + the year of 1977 drew me in) to go with '78s Last Kiss ... pair it up, so to speak. I didn't think it would be "that" far off from the other, but, man, it is. just lame as hell. Good enough only for some out of the way saloon filled with drunk people who don't care about music.Oh, well, I took a chance and bought this horrible thing. At least the cover art is nifty. The content stinks on ice, but, I guess I'll just liken this to taking a chance on some crappy cult movie that happens to have a bad ass one sheet poster. Looks nice on the shelf, but that's it. Feh... Keep livin', keep learnin'. Wasting my money on this was another small learning momentI saw where someone, also disappointed, was comparing this s/t album to the Eagles or Little River Band. That might be a fair comparison, but only in the way of it being mellow. Unlike those bands, this generic cheap, bar room/saloon music is totally devoid of anything really catchy. There's no hooks, good guitar work or anything atmospheric or engaging to redeem the low brow songwriting. It all just comes of so damn bland and banal.Sometimes lines from JAWS just pop into my head. Like where Quint says, "I'll never put on a life jacket again!" Well, in that same somber, disgruntled tone, I say, "I'll never listen to this trite, boring CD again"Honestly, I can't even tell that it's Joe Lynn Turrner singing, half of the time. If you want to try a Fandango record, go for "Last Kiss" It's far more JLT-centric and better produced, featuring at least a few memorable tunesWasted a 10 spot on this one (actually $8.97, total) so it's not like I paid too much. Well, check that, actually I did... in the amount of $8.97.I'm a forgiving, music loving person, so I can usually find some cool redeeming quality in the musicianship, production quality or vibe. Not here, buddy, This blows. That's all I got.side note: this mistake of a CD purchase will hurt more if you happen to put on some other good, witty, cool album. That's when owning this, really makes you feel like a schmuck! ha haMarc(NJ, USA)

Rainbow fans avoid!!
Fans of Jackson Browne might enjoy this disc; but if you're buying this because of JLT's Purple connections you are gonna be wasting your money. If you enjoy Joe's voice, and want something silly and enjoyable, I'd recommend something more like "Rescue You" from 1986; in which JLT does the cheesy Lou Gramm thing; and very well too! But Fandango is just a whole other genre. I haven't heard the rest of their output; and I gave this three stars because I'm not qualified to rate this sort of ballad driven americana either up or down...but it has nothing in common with his later career whatsoever...don't say you haven't been warned.
