Ma Loko o ke Aniani Kū a me ka Mea i Loa'a iā 'Āleka ma Laila: Through the Looking-Glass in Hawaiian

This work and its companion, Nā Hana Kupanaha a `Āleka ma ka `Āina Kamaha`o, is a great addition to the revitalization of the Hawaiian language. during Hawai'i history as an independent kingdom its native population went from a people with an exclusively oral language to one not only with a written language but one of the highest literacy rates in the world in a single generation. By 1850 the kingdom could boast more daily and weekly newspapers in its own written language the the United States west of the Mississippi. Its history, myths, and stories as well as Hawaiian translations of the Bible and many classics of 19th century literature were being published at an impressive rate to supply the hunger of native Hawaiians to make full use of their newly gained reading and writing skills.With the translation and publication of these two works, as well as the republication of many 19th century Hawaiian language books, it is to be hope that this signals a new golden period of Hawaiian language and cultural renaissance that began in the 1970's.E ole ka 'olelo hawai'i!
