You were smart to question this. The bright green light is very deceiving. When I look at this screen it hard to read, and I always keep a flashlight next to the phone in order to see the screen. I just went back on to Amazon website and if you do the same and scroll down you will see a picture of this model # with the "real" picture. Two different versions are on the website. It has caller ID, a built-in phone book for frequently called numbers, speed-dial, and speaker-phone. Its one quirk, as far as I can tell, is a feeble ringer. It has 3 settings: off, low, and high. "Off" works the way it should: the phone doesn't ring. "Low" produces a sound that is barely audible -- if you're asleep, rest easy, it won't wake you. "High" is also only a little more than barely audible. I keep the phone in a loft above my living-room/kitchen, and when the phone rings, the sound from my kitchen wall phone drowns out the phone in the loft. I can live with this situation since the other phones in my house will always alert me to an incoming call.
