Excellent volume, with amazing material from Darmstadt but poor treatment of Helsinki
Excellent volume, with amazing (unfamiliar to me at least) material from Darmstadt. I find it to be well thought out and presented, often providing unfamiliar but better than the standard selection examples of well known architects and designers work.Despite a general abundance of riches there are two negative observations, both about Helsinki. I find it to be well thought out and presented, often providing unfamiliar but better than the standard selection examples of well known architects and designers work.Excellent volume, with amazing material from Darmstadt and good treatment of most of the well-selected cities.Despite a general abundance of riches there are two negative observations, both about Helsinki. The treatment of Helsinki is poor and does not give the reader any sense of either of the jugenstil extremes:1/ the wild national-style-primitive which is hard to miss (in the Pohjola Kullervo Buidling on Alexanderkatu 100 yards east of Stockmann for example); or2/ the extremely delicate, minimalist work such as the glorious wedged-shaped pharmacy building on Katajanokka at the last stop of tram #4 quite near the international ferry terminal. Buildings in this later style are scattered around the city, often with a granite block ground floor and beautiful oval entry ways with appropriate metal work. The Saarinen main train station is a nice building and very much alive at the core of the modern transport system, but its lantern-bearers only suggest the romantic nationalist aspect of that Helsinki style. Helsinki claims and I think has the best collection of living jugenstil buildings in North Europe, and this book would do nothing to lead the reader to that conclusion so they would want to go to look at them.

Very good....
Great book, focuses primarily on the origins of Art Nouveau (~1880s) to the beginnings of Art Deco.

Beautiful, large book with lovely illustrations
We are enjoying this book as a historical reference and a nice 'coffee table' addition. The illustrations and photos are beautiful - I only wish there were more color photographs. Overall, it's a beautiful book to relax with, flip through and be transported to the stylish past. Very nice book for the price.

not as described
Missing dust jacket and has a big tear at the edge if the cover. Not what I expected at all.

Lovely Pictures
It's strange how many art books are printed in black and white. What's the point? Art needs color and life as a way to express itself unless the fulcrum of the piece is about the starkness! While this book has black and white photos, it also has color when color is necessary!

Nice book, could have done with more colour pictures as opposed to black and white.
