Grove Press Earthlings

【ちょっとネタバレあります】しばらく前に読み終わったのですが、なんとも言えない嫌悪感が胸にあり、レビューを書こうという気にもなれずに放置しておりました（英語で読んで理解もアバウトだったにもかかわらず･･･汗）。しかし、ちょっと時間をおいて、改めて考えてみて、「ある意味、この作品は名作かも」と思う点もあったので、がんばってレビューを書いてみようと思います。まず、私はこの作者の作品は『Convenience Store Woman』を先に読みました。『Convenience Store Woman』の主人公は、いわゆる”一般的な社会”に適応することに違和感を持っている女性です。そして、その主人公がふとしたことを契機に、自分のそうした在りようを対象化し（自覚し）、少し変化していくというストーリーが展開していました。『Earthlings』の主人公も”一般的な社会”にスムーズになじめない女性なので、私としては、そうした女性が（『Convenience Store Woman』の主人公のように）自分を対象化し、少しずつ変化していくのかなという予想で読んでいました。しかし、物語が進むにつれて、主人公は（ある意味）どんどん自分の作り出した物語にしがみつくようになり（妄想の世界に執着するようになり）、どんどん狂気の世界に陥っていきます。その狂い具合が凄まじく、読んでいて胸が嫌悪感でいっぱいになったわけですが、一方で、主人公はこうしたプロセスを経て自分の感覚（味覚）を取り戻していくわけなので、これもある意味主人公が「自分」という物を取り戻す物語の1つでもあったと思います。だから、『Convenience Store Woman』と『Earthlings』は、同じ種類の困難の2つの”切り抜け方”が描かれていて、2作品１セットとして理解できるのではないかというのが私の感想です（あるいは、困難を切り抜ける人の心の両面を2作品で描いているとも捉えられるでしょうか）。そして、読者としては『Convenience Store Woman』のような、問題を対象化する（問題と距離を取る）切り抜け方の方が気軽に楽しく読める訳ですが、問題が生じた人に本質的に生じていることは何かといえばやはり『Earthlings』の主人公の体験のようなものかも、という思いもわきます。読むのはちょっと苦しい作品ですが、人が変わることの困難さや苦しさを真摯に描き出したという意味において、名作といえるのではないかと感じました。【英語の勉強の教材として】「英語でとにかくいろんな作品を読みたい」という方にはお勧めですが（難しい単語はほとんど使われていません）、繰り返し読んで勉強しようと思うのであれば、英語の教材には適していないと思います。この作品は一度読んだら、「もう十分」と感じるのが多くの人の反応かと思います。

This book seems marketed as a quirky, cutesie novel about a woman who thinks that she is an extraterrestrial, but that is a very superficial and somewhat misleading description. This book is dark. The pivotal scenes are disturbing - a child being sexually abused by an adult teacher, an incestuous underage sexual encounter that shatters a family and a fantastical and extended description of cannibalism. Yeah, this is a thought-provoking critique of society and the pressure on people, especially women, to conform to societal norms and that is valuable; but this book was unpleasant reading to an extreme in my view. I don't understand all the praise.

Stop going through the reviews, the content warnings functioned as a list of spoilers for me. I read this book because I loved convenience store woman (which is a good prelude to earthlings) and also because the reviews titled "repulsive" and the like made me laugh. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone one with a weak stomach.. in fact... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone at all because this book will remain my dirty little secret. I am only willing to recommend it here, anonymously. It WAS repulsive, and I loved it. I couldn't believe what I was reading sometimes. I reminded me of old japanese horror films: strange, absurd, creepy, and full of wtf moments. This book was gold.

Natsuki at age eleven is convinced she’s from another planet. Why else would her mother and sister so viciously torment her? Her plush toy talks to her constantly and tells her she has magical powers, with terrible consequences.This novel is not pleasant reading — but it compels you to read it. The writing is excellent. Murata portrays childhood abuse in such realistic detail, it’s hard to bear. When she switches to the adult Natsuki, we see the damage her traumatic childhood has done. She is completely alienated from society, and married to a young man who’s sure he's an alien like her. When Natsuki’s childhood friend Yu enters the picture again, he too is an alien.So we have three aliens against the world. As warped as their thinking may be, society is not much better. Earthlings is a shocking portrait of how cruelly conventional, aggressive, and destructive Earthlings can be.While the young aliens do wacky and repulsive things, the Earthlings in their lives are not much better. Maybe worse. It’s up to the reader to decide.I don’t think Murata really knew how to end her remarkable book. I did not find the ending convincing or in any way satisfying. But I should mention that I loved Convenience Store Woman. Marata has a quite a talent for creating characters who are bizarrely out of step with society.

wish I had picked another book. perhaps the story doesn't translate well but this was pretty bad all around. a story about what happens when mental illness goes unchecked.
