This is a good can opener. I am replacing the one I had used the last 2 years without any problems. The cutting wheel still cut perfectly, the mechanical parts still functioned perfectly but my young Cur Hound got hold of it and chewed up the handles so I bought 2 new ones yo replace the old one. I use this opener exclusively and I am a senior citizen and it is easy to operate even on tge days my hands aren't as nimble as they once were.

This manual can opener is excellent. The handle is very comfortable to hold, and it opens cans smoothly without much effort. It’s sturdy and high-quality, just like other OXO products I’ve used. Highly recommend.

When it comes to opening cans, it is all I could ask. If that were all that mattered, I would give it five stars. But I finally gave up and removed the Soft Handles. I put it in the dishwasher after use, and water kept getting into the handles, and leaking out at annoying times. Without the soft grip, the handles are not so comfortable, but they are good enough, and the functioning of the opener is unchanged.

Update on February 3, 2021: I STILL ADORE THIS CAN OPENER. But today, I thought I had found a hair in my can of tomatoes (the first one I opened). While I was opening a second can of tomatoes, I noticed that the can opener made a threadlike shaving of metal as it went around the can, and I mistook this for a hair in the first can. I have no idea what happened - the can opener never did this to other cans. It's hard to know what is actually to blame, because the new can opener has worked flawlessly up until these 2 cans of tomatoes. I will continue to test and try to report any further problems. I LOVE THIS CAN OPENER. I hope it is not putting metal in my food. It hasn't rusted after about a week of fairly heavy use. I'm going to investigate the company that packs these cans of tomatoes, because it could be a flaw or inherent weakness in their cans too (since this doesn't happen with any other cans so far). Original feedback: I really like this can opener. It has nice non-slip grips, and the crank you turn is a nice large size. When you put it onto the edge of the can and try to pierce the can, it pierces very easily. Turning the crank is very easy. The can opener stays on the can and does not try to jump off, and it does not try to shred the paper label on the can. It doesn't mangle the can lid, although you are left with a sharp edge on the lid like is normal for this type of can opener, so be careful when handling the parts of the can where you have cut. I detected no metal shreds from this can opener. The can opener was easy to remove from the can. This can opener opens much wider than most manual can openers than I have ever seen. It will let you open it so far that the two halves of the can opener form a straight line. This made it so much easier to clean than any other can opener I have used before. I have not owned it long enough to tell you anything about how rustproof it is. But it works great so far, and I have owned it a week now. I'll try to update my review after more time has passed.

I bought 3 OXO Good Grips items in the past year. Two are stellar, and one is mediocre (I'm looking at you, Lasagna flipper). As my Starfrit can opener recently died a dull death, I searched Amazon for a replacement. The Starfrit wasn't a bad product or brand, but all good can openers must dull. Ultimately, I bought the OXO due to its high average review score. ◘ Functionality ◘ Fortunately, OXO's can opener is of the stellar variety. It tightly grips cans and succinctly slices through metal without a fuss. I've washed it many times, and it shows no signs of wear. ◘ Grip ◘ The grips are rubberized and true to their name: quite good. The turning handle is large enough that it will never hurt your fingers on a stubborn can, which may not even exist since it slices so easily. ◘ Additional thoughts ◘ 1. While it opens cans with ease, it can cause lids to fall into the can if you chop full circle. It does not grip the can and help you out in any way. Like I said, it's a very basic can opener... and all I need, frankly. I tend to leave a tiny bit on top and just pull the lid off to avoid any issues. It's something to consider if buying for someone who has difficulty manipulating the average opener. 2. This specific can opener is NOT magnetized, just to clear up any marketing confusion. ◘ Conclusion ◘ I'm very happy with this product, and I hope our relationship lasts many years. Fingies crossed! Update 06/10/2019: Been using it for over a year. No rust, and it opens cans like it's new. Couldn't ask for more.
