Happy customer
My husband linked the WEN planer to me and I decided instead to get the DeWalt, based on the reviews. It arrived today and he immediately put it to use.Pros:- It's actually not as loud as I expected, because he hooked it up to the vacuum for dust control, and there was very little dust.- Instructions are super easy to follow, and setup was easy as well.- The unit is solid. No loose parts and it doesn't spit out wood like the WEN reviews warned.- He was playing around with it so much that I hardly saw him at all this afternoon (that could be a con, but let's count it as a pro for now because it's allowing me to catch up on reviews and other work).Cons:- It's heavy, so you won't be moving it around too much (this could also be a pro).- Husband likes it so much, he wants to buy more wood and make more things (this could also be a pro, but right now it's going to cost some $$$ because lumber yards aren't free).I'm happy I spent the extra $110 to get a DeWalt vs. the WEN. I'm a bargain girl, not a cheapskate. Big tools like this are an investment and I don't want to skimp out on quality or safety.

Does the job and does it well
I put a couple hundred board feet through this thing and it made rough walnut plank into some beautiful boards. Worked out of the box with no adjustments necessary. A shop vac is a must have accessory. No hick-ups once I did the initial depth adjustment. The measurements on side gauge are very true to the 1/32.

After a glowing review in Fine Woodworking magazine I crossed over to the lazy side ...
For years I have dimensioned panels with two wooden hand planes dating from the 1850s. Eliminating bow, twist, and/or cup is not a problem. However dimensioning the other side, and especially matching the dimensions of two or more boards was always daunting for me. After a glowing review in Fine Woodworking magazine I crossed over to the lazy side and will never return. I had a half dozen panels waiting to be finished and they were all done within an hour and to within 1/128 inch, and as smooth as if I had spent hours with a card scraper. All the features are as advertised. Two speeds with fabulous results on most woods with the faster speed. I haven't done boards longer than 24 in. so have not considered the optional feed trays. It's noisy but not alarmingly so. I was obliged to rig an exhaust set up as the blower overwhelmed my dust/chip vacuum system, as the instructions said it would. A lidded bucket with an intake fitting and a screened hole to let the excess air out and I was good to go.I had borrowed some time on a friend's cast iron monster planer from the '50s and this works better, faster, smoother, quieter, more portable, and vastly cheaper than his.You can't go wrong with this unit.

Not the same Dewalt quality
I had the original 12.5" model and after 10 years of good service it started spitting screws so I decided it was time for an upgrade. I typically plane hardwoods not over the hardness of maple so this machine should have no problem surfacing the wood.First, the exhaust attachment is mind dumbing, I don't know what shop vac attachment can attach to it but after a trip to Home Depot I decided tape would have to suffice. annoying.Second, on the non-finishing speed, the exhaust will constantly get clogged. I'm talking on every other pass. annoying.A secondary dust collector has to aid in the exhaust process otherwise it will clog on every run. I can only use the finishing speed setting otherwise, you guessed it, it clogs.not sure why I spent all this money for all this aggravation. Do yourself a favor and go with a different brand.

Two Stars
Does what it is supposed to do. That was my initial (4 star) review; here's my update:This is my third one of these and my first real complaint. Generally I've had no problems straight out of the box, not this time. I cranked up when I first got it then got busy with other stuff. Until today, in the month I have owned it I ran one small southern yellow board through and attributed the lousy cut to the board. today, my first chance to work in my new furniture shop (I've been at this 40 years or so). Ran four 8/4 walnut legs through and the planer tore them up. Acts like worn out blades. Further the set of the plate and rollers is all screwed up. Black marks from the feed rollers. If I stay on the left side, no marks but it's a completely different depth. I'm guessing this was a return they cleaned up and sent out again. I am requesting a new one and no charge for the return. I waited months to be able to build again so my patience for this crap is non-existent. I'll change my rating and update on how they handle this.Update 3/14 pulled the blades, one side dull and with enough residue to have been heavily used. No idea how to adjust the roller that marks the boards. No comment from either Amazon or Dewalt. I'm guessing it was a repackaged return.

Mejor que el truper que devolvi. Buena compra
Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Look for carbide replacement blades before even trying your first big job.
3 main issues that show Dewalt's greed and arrogance.1. Table extensions are an $80 option...a) they are Not optional and b) they cost Dewalt $5 to make.2. Low quality blades...I read dozens of reviews commenting on the soft edges and how the planer was fantastic once New carbides were purchased. By the end of my first 5 boards of softwoods the blades needed to be flipped.3. The overpriced, optional table extensions from complaint #1, can't fold up to remain on planer so have to be removed for transport and storage. If Dewalt wanted, these issues could be very easily remedied at minimal cost.Otherwise it's a very well made planer.

Superb product!
I did a lot of research before buying this planer. I saw quite a few posts about problems with blades and snipe.I have run about 300 hundred feet through this planer at both low and high speed. I've limited my passes to 1/32 - 1/16. Absolutely perfect results. Very little snipe. Sands out in 2 seconds. No problem with blades. I built a stand for it and used a Big Horn dust bag for it (also from Amazon) which captures about 99.9% of the wood chips. I also built a sled for it to plane down twisted and cupped boards basically turning the planer into a jointer. This is a GREAT tool and I would certainly buy one again and have recommended it to many friends already.Good job Dewalt!
