Mic Cable Patch Cord - 25 ft, 6 Pack Male to Female XLR Cable

For the longest time, I have been looking into investing some money into getting some nice long XLR cables. I do mainly field recording, and I never really know how a setup is going to look or where I am going to be allowed to go and establish my 'base camp.' Being so, length is important to me, and I have just been barely getting by on the short stuff. My pushing point was when I was asked to record a local DCA Drum and Bugle Corps, and a college fraternity's spring music recital. So I set out to find a good deal with some good quality. Long story short, I set off to Amazon to compare different brands and price ranges. Eventually, I came across these cables offered by GLS audio. Needless to say, I had never heard of them, but they did offer a few things that caught my eye: 1) the price, 2) cable connector end style, 3) the length I needed, and 4) option of colors. The only thing they were lacking was a bunch of consumer reviews to increase their credibility (hopefully solve that today =) ). I consulted Google on the matter, and couldn't find anything negative about them. I also found their website, and although not the fanciest thing on the net, seemed credible. So, I took the risk (I'm not one for buying things without a ton of reviews) and made my order for the colored, 100' six pack of XLR cables. A few days later, I got them in a well packaged box, and set about my evaluation. First impressions were great! I was pleased to see that each cable came with 2 Velcro straps holding it together that I could reuse in the future. As I picked the cable up and began to feel its insulated shielding for texture and flexibility, I was pleased to recall feelings of more expensive cables I have bought in the past which still serve me well to this day. They weren't stiff at all, and had a nice supple feel. Next I looked at the cable ends. Cable ends are nothing to take for granted, they make a huge difference. The last thing I wanted was some cheap-o end that would shift in the XLR port and caused a sporadic scratchy connection, or pins that would oxidize up in my equipment. I was pleased to see that these were no such connections. In fact, they resembled almost to a 'T' Neutrik XLR ends (which are the best kind of XLR ends in my opinion). Really, its not worth getting XLR cables without them. They make a world of difference in connection stability. They have a nice tight connection and a little rubber grommet that keeps them from shifting even the tiniest bit when hooked up. Having owned Neutrik XLR ends, I can say that though these are an imitation of that brand, they are nearly identical. The only difference that I can see that may make a difference over time is that the internal pins appear to be a (ever so) slightly different metal. Will an oxidation factor come into play here? Too soon to tell, but I'm gonna go with no because they still look pretty darn good. And though time has not yet become a factor on this, the ends do look pretty solid on the cables themselves. So with all this, that leaves line noise as the next big question. Would they suck? Would they hiss? Would they rumble? Well, like the words printed on the cable sides, I have so far found them to be "Noise-Free." I have recorded with them twice now and haven't any problems yet. And the last time, I mistakenly set my mic levels quite low and had to boost the signal in software. Even then, the sound remained clear to me (and remind you I'm using 100' plus per mic). I really had to abuse the software gain to get any sort of extra sound, but by that time, I am positive I had approached my own mic's self noise threshold. So yeah, as for line noise, I don't think there is any problem at all. Feel confident that your signal will reach strongly. A little note on wrapping them up: They come all nice and pretty wrapped up in nice tight (not like kink tight, but organized tight) loops. When you unwrap them first time, they will hold some of the loops in the line a bit. You can stretch them out no problem in a hurry. I'm not sure how you like wrapping cables, but I like hand wrapping them into large flexible wire loops as to not force kinks and weird bends. Yeah, you will want to do that before your first gig less you be stuck an unseen amount of time untwisting them as you wrap them up at the end of the day. lol. Once I did that to all of them, its been pretty awesome since. =) Also, I will say I have only used these indoors so far. I do plan on using them outdoors soon though. I'll try to remember to update this on how they handle being out in the sun over time. So, I think that pretty much covers everything. I would definitely buy these again, and more cable products from this company. I've really enjoyed this set of cables. I've used them to run from my mixer to crossover, then to the power amps. The connections feel really solid, and well constructed. I also like the feel of the cable jacket. I've read some other reviews where they've had trouble with noisy cables, but I haven't had any issue. The color coding has proven to be a greater benefit than I had imagined. It's easy to get a mess of black cords running in the back of your rack and these really help to reduce any connection headaches. I can quickly look and see exactly where everything goes. It saves a little time, and anything that can simplify life these days is a welcome asset. Sure, you can spend a lot more on premium cables, but are the benefits worth it? Probably not. A lot of time you can hear the difference between shoddy low-tier cables and mid level cables, but by what I've seen the big difference between mid level cables and premium ones are mostly in durability. These still work great. Would they hold up under the rigors of a big time touring show, used every day, wrapping, unwrapping, connecting and unconnecting, getting yanked on, beer spilled on them, used as a belt when Jimbo the roadie pops the button on his jeans? They just might. I don't know. But for most of the weekend warriors out there, these should last and sound great for many years.

Will these cables stand up to industry standards like Mogami? So far, surprisingly, yes! (With an asterisk though) To be fair i'm not using these cables as directed at all. What I have done is purchase several orders of these cables, cut them up, and wire them as various balanced mic/line input patch-points around my studio with the huge bonus of being color-coded. Downsides: The shielding is not the best of the best but it's entirely adequate. And it really is, naked these cables perform very well. No foil or braid internally but the ground wrap does it's job well. Once I got some wild static on one line running 48v phantom for a few minutes, but this has never come up again so who knows if it was the cable/mic/preamp/a rogue CB operator with a heavy signal/or what have you. The problem has never repeated on the same line or any others so I don't know what to tell you. Since I am using mine in a permanent wiring setup I have since wrapped most color groups with copper foil and I have had no problems yet outside of that one. These are honestly the best quality for price I that I have seen. I don't run these for priority channels currently but whenever I jack into lines run with these I can't tell the difference in noise/clarity.etc. compared to the "big boys". They transmit clean signals just fine and unless you need to run more than 50 ft. in a single line grab this pack instead of the GLS 300ft spool -- you get the same cable length and 12 bonus xlr m/f connections that you can throw into your fix-it drawer, you can color-code, and it all costs the same. I'm still not sure if I would use these as primaries but you really can't beat the price and what you get for it and so far I have experienced no real problem with them so conceivably you could use these cables for anything without issue. Also, some people have commented that "Training" these cables to wrap properly has been an issue. I have experienced no such thing, simply take the time to slowly unwrap the cables from the tight coil that they come wrapped in and take care to re-wrap them without any kinks and they will wrap perfectly out of the box and continue to be perfect through use. That has been my experience and I have purchased this set 3 times by now. I don't know how well they stand up to heavy use on the road, that's not how I've been using mine. Check other reviews if you want to use these as road/theatre cables or foresee that you would be plugging and unplugging these on a regular basis.

If you set up cables in a studio to leave permanently, then you probably ought to get gold-plated fittings to keep the connection free of any corrosion. But if you are working remotely, setting up gear then striking it, setting it up again somewhere else, and repeating on a regular basis, then you need these colored cables. The constant friction on the metal parts will keep the contacts conducting, though I haven't seen any evidence of corrosion or wear after two years. It's hard to label cables for every use, and even if you number them, the numbers on the far end don't do you much good unless you go over there and read them periodically. The most practical solution I know of is color. Run your cables in pairs of complimentary colors. Using a mnemonic, you'll always know which cable is in which channel. The mnemonic I use is from boats navigation on water: "Red, Right, Returning." That applies to electronics and audio just as well. So, Red is the Right channel of the first stereo color pair, and Green is the Left. That normally would mean that Green is Channel 1, Red is Channel 2. Next on the color wheel would be Orange, whose complimentary color, Purple, would be the Left channel, or channel 3. Thus Orange is the Right channel of that pair, which would make it channel 4. Then you've got Blue for the Left channel of the last pair, channel 5, and Yellow for channel 6, Right. The warm colors are all Right channels, and the cool colors are Left channels. Even if you're running them monophonically, pairing them that way helps you to keep them straight in your mind. Your label on the mixer (or in your DAW) would read something like Lead Vocal M149 Green; Guitar AKG414 Red; Surface-Tom U89 Purple; Under-Tom AKG414 Orange; and so forth, listing the purpose, the mic, and the color. Work never was so simple! These cables have proven helpful beyond belief for location recording, but I use them in the studio, too. I keep them coiled nicely so that there is no spaghetti mess. I lowered the rating by one star, because the hardware is not gold-plated. Yes, I knew that before I bought them, and no, I don't really care, but most gold-plated hardware does seem to fit together more easily, as well as giving you peace of mind that all connections are working without error, but honestly I have no reason to suspect these cables of operating otherwise. But why not go all the way and plate them in gold? I'm careful with cables and hardware, so I haven't had any problem with wear. Will edit post if things change. By the way, I wouldn't use these in conspicuous places on stage. Black looks better. But for all places that are less visible to the audience, these are fine.

Free time is at a premium for me. Consequently, I do not write a lot of reviews. However, every now and then I experience a product, company and/or service that is either such an outstanding value or such a dismal disappointment that it absolutely warrants my time and effort to notify prospective buyers of my own personal experience. These GLS Balanced XLR cables fall into the former category. I was apprehensive about purchasing these cables to use in my Home Theater System. I understand that many folks will be purchasing these cables for microphone or studio applications. For those of you who own audio/video gear with Balanced XLR connectors, do not let the insanely low cost of these cables dissuade you from seriously considering trying these cables in your system. I have a 7.2 Home Theater system consisting of a Marantz AV7701 preamplifier, Emotiva Monoblock amplifiers and two large powered subwoofers. All of these were previously connected with unbalanced (very expensive) Monster RCA interconnects. Just one of the Nine RCA interconnects (that I had been using) cost more than all nine of the GLS XLR cables combined. As this review is for the six pack, obviously I purchased additional GLS cables. There is nothing superfluous about these cables; they do not sport any exotic materials, they don't scream "expensive" on visual inspection and do not arrive in any fancy packaging (just a plastic bag with a GLS sticky label). The package also includes two velcro straps that I found useful. Likewise, there is nothing about the feel, construction or appearance of these cables that would suggest poor quality control or "cheap" workmanship. Applying tension to the cable gives the impression that they are firmly connected to the end connectors and will not come apart under any kind of normal use conditions. The rubber jacket on the cable is compliant (not stiff) and pulls through a pile of other cables nicely. While the XLR connectors are not gold or copper plated, they have a quality finish (there are no rough or sharp edges) and fit nicely into my amp and pre-amp connectors. The release mechanism works smoothly, as it should. My subjective impression is that the cables are of "good" quality. Now, for the important part ... how do they sound? I am not a golden eared audiophile. If you are hoping that I am going to comment on how there is more air in the upper midrange or how the singer's breath is palpable and textured, or how the upper registers feel a bit more more forward while the midrange is just a hint laid back while the base exudes greater authority ... well, I will have to disappoint you. What I can say, absolutely, is that these 9 cables that cost me less than a Ben Franklin sound every bit as good as the VERY expensive unbalanced RCA Monster cables that I was previously using. Considering the phenomenal value they represent, I feel compelled to give them 5 stars for value and I couldn't be happier. If anything changes my opinion, over the course of time, then I will be sure to post an update. For now, at this price, I can highly recommend these GLS Balanced XLR cables. ** As a side note, I would like to thank user "flytheater" for his review. I use these for my Zoom Handy recorder and these work just fine. They're short enough cables to be easy for portable recording projects and while I only needed 4 of them, it's nice to have some spare. These hold up well and I have instrument cables and a mic from GLS which I think are amazing quality especially for the price. I'd buy more for other projects I have where shorter run XLRs may be useful. I picked up the 3ft 6 pack for my intended use of on-the-field music recording.

Decent quality cables, great value buy, comes with velcro ties, two per cable which is nice and very handy. Was going to purchase through the local store, but they are asking more than double the price per cable for similar quality stuff. 4 out of 5 since they are not the best, but great value.
